I think the better tag line is don't take fire works with you on an ue excursion when we are on a heightened terror alert level.  Also going into a subway tunnel with them, probably not the best plan.  They just announced they are going to throw money at improving rail security due to concerns that Bin Ladin suggested hitting that too.  Pretty soon we're gonna have to go through metal detectors to go outside Sad

that's why I keep stuff in my truck and only pack what I think I'll need.  Roman candles really aren't among them, but my UE pack does look like much like a burglars tool kit.

Thought I'd post this link- talks about railroad trespassing alert systems http://www.fra.dot.gov/downloads/Research/ord0603.pdf
Knowing how to do it is smart, knowing how to do it right and stay out of trouble is even better.

Also if you read the article and are awarding any type of government prototype grants, I want in.

A few things...

The tunnel in question is NOT IN USE.
The tunnel in question is DISCONNECTED COMPLETELY from the rest of the subway system
The tunnel in question HAS NO TRAINS.

It is basically a concrete box in the ground that has been abandoned for 40 years.

When the NY Post broke this story, they made it sound as stupid ridiculous and dramatic as they could because they have zero journalism standards. They tied it in with a much more concerning story - that of a crazy guy who wandered through a sub aquatic tunnel via the World Trade Center site. THAT is a HUGE lapse in security and something no NYC explorer with half a brain would ever do.

In a nutshell, this story was blown way out of proportion, with more lies and misinformation out there than one can shake a dead cat at.

As for fear of terrorism, fuck that. If you want to be anally probed every time you leave your house, move to a different country. Perpetual fear = epic terrorist win.

This could have happened to anyone that explores, at any time.

It is amazing that the guy who babbled about placing a bomb, and also walked all the way under the Hudson got let out immediately, and yet one particular explorer of a disused tunnel remains in jail.  HOWEVER: this story continues to spread BECAUSE of the way in which that person has treated other explorers over the years.  It looks like the text must have been a very small story in the actual paper.  Yet, it's the most popular story on the Post's website.  Why is that.  it's not a very interesting story really.  It's because EXPLORERS are linking it like crazy and revelling in his fate as he has done so many times to others.  I wish the other 3 explorers busted with him well.

I miss the old Stern Show, but for the record he's talking about the tunnel crowd, not the UE crowd in general. I would think by now everyone knows that NYC is not a good place for anykind of exploring!

No, it's still a great place for exploring... you just need to know what the hell you're doing.

I've always liked this tunnel exploration video.  Steve Duncan is admin of undercity.org.  He probably has an account on opacity.  I know that he and Motts are friends or at least acquaintances.

I know I'm responding to a month-old post, but you might want to think twice about keeping those kinds of tools in your vehicle. I've heard of multiple cases in which explorers getting busted have ended up with additional charges based on B&E tools found in their vehicles. As our fourth amendment rights begin circling the drain along with our second amendment rights (thank fuck you, Indiana!), it's more and more the case that all bets are off as far as searches go.
