Congrats man!  Sounds like fun.  Instead of renting a gallery, talk to the "officials" and ask them to use the town hall or library in the town it is in.  Or maybe they have some space set aside, that you can use for a few nights to show off the stuff and save money on the renting of a gallery.

I appreciate that recommendation, Mac - I've got to get in touch with the Chamber of Commerce President, who is my old friends' mom - she'll know where we can set up our gallery - based on our feedback from the town, I think we'll have some good luck with a venue that will hopefully come free or very cheap...

What a great opportunity! Sounds like lots of fun and a great way to preserve the history of this place.

Very cool that the official was that excited about it too.

Just a quick update about this project for those of you who might be interested...In this last week, we've gotten a call from our contact at City Hall, and he's passed our intentions on to several other city people who have similar interests - sounds like there's beginning to be a general buzz about our project, which I'm hoping doesn't backfire! My biggest fear is that they get the idea from us, and then bypass us altogether and get their own people in there to do the same thing. In the meantime, I've also enlisted the help from the head of another city dept, who is an old friend and basically knows EVERYONE and EVERYTHING about the town - she's excited too, and is working to track us down a possible venue for our gallery, as well as getting our project ideas to some key players she knows very well...We likely will not begin our shooting until 1) we've taken a tour of the place to get our bearings, as it is HUGE. We plan to take a lot of notes and a lot of quick shots at that time, so we can plot a course and set up a map of sorts to make our actual shoots as productive and efficient as possible.  2) We need also need to wait until all this snow melts and dries up a bit - we're currently buried around here under several feet of snow pack - our roads are narrow, and the snow piles are gigantic, making it hard to get around...nearly every house you look at has major icicles and ice dams - ( a shoot of that is coming soon!) At home, we've started seeing water marks in our bedroom from what must be a 6 foot long, several foot think dam in the gutter just outside our window -   Angry I'm guessing that with more than half of winter still to come, it's gonna get worse, and this Spring is going to bring some major flooding issues and high rivers...Anyway, it'll be AFTER that that we will hopefully begin our enormous task of shooting the entire inside and outside of the vast complex - there will be three, maybe four of us there, and two of our crew will be shooting either totally with film or both digi and film...Stay tuned!

Update: DAMMIT! I should've known better than to think I could believe the words of a local government, and their blessing to do a photographic project for them. My partner was emailed the other day and told that we'll have to go sign our waivers next week, to be able to access the grounds of the complex. It also stated that "unfortunately, we won't be allowed inside the buildings"! WTF?! We're signing waivers for what, supervised access tothe dangerous LAND around the complex? I am baffled and disgusted that this has happened, and at this point, I really don't think I want to be involved at all anymore.

I'm not sure what happened, and a return email to find out has gone unanswered. I do know that our first contact no longer has anything to do with our proposal, but now we apparently have a small army of city people with their fingers in the pie...I'm definitely still going to go to this meeting next week, but if their idea of giving us access to the outside only can't be remedied, then the entire lot of them can kiss my giant white a**. I have no patience whatsoever for bullsh*t and this seems to be headed into a giant pile of it. Since I already have hundreds of pictures of the exteriors of these buildings, I could care less about getting even more of them from a little closer up!

I honestly cannot for the life of me understand these people that operate within our local governments. Do thy realize that from the outside, they appear to be completely inept?! What could they possibly gain from preventing us controlled access to these places?! If we are signing waivers releasing them from any and all liability, then what the ffff is the problem?! Our proposal would provide them with an excellent, thorough record of this complex, which was once the city's largest employer. MANY people would love to be able to see what has become of it, and most of the remaining buildings are structurally sound. There is absolutely NO justification for their position...This is seriously maddening, and is so typical of bureaucracy - the few that have reason and want to get things done are lost in the mindlessness of majority rule, which is typically driven by a desire to be politically correct despite practical reality.

No offense to anyone here, but this is one of the many concepts that support my theory that we humans truly are a bunch of idiots.  This is the kind of attitude those in control have towards our history, one that has led to the reckless destruction of countless historical structures, especially over the last ten years. Will it ever change? Will dumb people ever stop being put into positions that give them the power to ruin things for the rest of us?

I'll post back when I get through that meeting next week. Wish us luck - I think we're gonna need a lot of it, now, thanks to these clowns... Angry If it goes bad, maybe I'll just break down after all these years and find my way in there anyway, despite the security. It wouldn't be the first time someone figured out how to be stealthy, right?
