Has anyone ever heard of, or has been prescribed or given to in the hospital, a medication called Haldol or Haloperidol?

It was given to me as a chemical restraint in the hospital. It was an injection right into my thigh. Sucked none the less.

I had a terrible reaction to it. I was trembling and sweating really bad. At the hospital they kept trying to give me Valium but it wasn't helping at all.

All I know about the drug is that it is an anti-psychotic medication. In the first place im not psychotic and it worked horribly as a chemical restraint. It didn't knock me out or calm me down at all. It just made me feel like crap.

If anyone knows anything about this medication and can shed some light on it, that would be great.

A great place to start is here:

It's a rather old-school med, I don't see it prescribed too often (in a retail pharmacy setting anyways)...I'll see what my system at work has lurking about it.

pyscho, This is prescribed at times for severe anxiety, different mental disorders, and has even been used for patients with Tourettes syndrome. Also has been used in situations were there is a drug-induced psychosis. It blocks dopamine a chemical in the brain, which is in turn, believed to cause a tranquilizing effect... It has alot of side effects, which include jerky movements, restlessness, sweating, rise or lowering in blood pressure, even convulsions if you have a reaction to it> Dont know what happened, and why they shot you up with this, but, i hope you are doing much better and have this drug written down as one you CANNOT take!  Cyber, may have some other notes for you later, Take care!

I don't think I have it on a list of medications not to take.

They gave that to my dad in the hospital.  OMG.  He got violent, was throwing stuff, was totally irrational...needless to say he didn't get that anymore.    Talk about an adverse reaction...

P.K. were you agitated or combative at all when you were at the hospital?

Yes I would say combative would be the word to use.

Ok.  Alas, that's one of the "drugs of choice" in a situation where the patient is agitated or combative.  They really don't want to use heavier sedation if they don't have to - they just want something fast-acting that will calm a person down.

I have never felt any worse then the time they gave it to me. I still have nightmares.
