Wait, they're turning Pennhurst into a haunted house?  I'm all for saving and re-using these places, but doesn't it seem a bit disrespectful to claim to be haunted by the ghosts of the residents?

All of these people should be murdered.

Yes, yes they should.

..But, I suppose it is better than demolition.

Yeah.. it looks a lot like a mix between Eastern State and Avalon Danvers. It's great that it isn't being demolished and replaced with more bullshit condos that no one needs.. but at the same time, it's a fucking abomination.

First impression is a pitifully schlock version of Waverly's current ownership.
At least with Waverly, they're not planting cheap plastic props in a bad-carnival
house of horrors style. This new direction with Pennhurst simply cheapens
everything about it, and seems a cheat of it's history.

Hopefully, anything they install will be more temporary and easy to remove without causing damage.  Then I can look at this as a positive thing: it's buying more time for Pennhurst to be used for something more useful.

This seems crude to me....but if it keeps demo at a distance......than I guess there are good points to it too.

I'm curious as well to the "110% haunted" thing but I doubt this will prevent any demolition, just someone making a quick buck. Ever since that hair-gelled freak on the Travel Channel made his visit, I think that sealed it's fate. On a sidenote, isn't this site a bit disrespectful to people that died & suffered at Pennhurst. Seems like it would hurt any preservation project.

any idea how much of it they are using for this? i mean it seems unlikely to me they would use the entire place.

Holy crap I just saw this! I agree 110% that what they're doing is pretty rotten - they're basically mocking what went on there IMO...I dunno - maybe the hell people went through there should be given a little more courtesy than plastic freaking skeletons and goofy zombie patients staggering around in bad costumes and makeup...?

I wouldn't go there for that, ever! What a waste of a remarkable part of history... Angry

I miss the OLD Pennhurst. Where late at night, i'd step out of my car inhaling the sweet Spring City air and hit the trail. Seeing the eerie silhouette of the buildings as you crested the last hill. Walking into an open door. Sitting with some friends on Limerick roof, wearing sunglasses in the dark, stargazing. Hiding from security or PA state police as they drove around looking for you.

That's how Pennhurst SHOULD be. The owner should've left it the overgrown mess that it was until he knew what to REALLY do. Highly secured and sealed, but as it was.
