OCD- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

I know.. this should go into the Psychosis of the Week Thread, but.. eh..
Is it me, or is it a common disorder too? With varying levels of severity?
For example- I personally have a "thing' with cookies... Oreos are the worst for me.
Since the packages come in equal rows of cookies, if the rows do not stay equal all the time.. It bugs me, and I will take the tray out of the package, move the cookies around, make sure they are all equal again.(even if it means I have to eat a couple). Just so I can put them away.
If I put them away without making sure they are even and equal.. It makes me nuts and I get fairly anxious until I get up to go make it 'right'
So.. Does anyone else have something that will bother them like this, or something that they have to do.. daily/constantly.. otherwise they get anxious and aggitated?
Or am I short an Oreo in the package?

I have a thing about symmetry and order.
I hate things that are messed up. Mu window sill is home to my son's story books and there has to be only two or three piles, stacked largest to smallest and they have to be the same height.
I'm the same with displays like mantlepieces and shelves.
I get really pissed off if I have arranged something and then someone comes along and moves it around. I even fill my washing up bowl in a certain way.
Hhhhmmmmmm.....
Do I sound a bit mad?

Not sure about this, but I think I read somewhere that the female brain 'desires' symetry.
I realise that I could be opening a family-sized can of worms and I apologise for possible sexist comments. Let me have a look at this tomorrow and I'll get back to you...

Not a can of worms with me.. We all know that male and female brains tend to work differently.
And that in some cases, the way the brain works crosses gender boundaries.
I'm really curious to know if my cheese slid off my cracker on this one.

Nope! Not opening a can of worms! I think you're probably right about that. But, once at a friend's (male) apartment, he was showing me a picture that was under a c.d. in its case. I put the c.d. back into it, and he noticed that I didn't put the c.d. in so that the title was straight across. I had put it back in at a tilt. He said that that usually bothered him, and we laughed about it. As we started to walk away though, he had to back up, and go back and fix it, so the title would be straight. It bothered him that much. So, I think alot of people have there own little rituals, whether you're a man or a woman.

I have a silliness about routine and rituals - if I develop a routine, there's no breaking it. I *have* to go to bed with a glass of water, knowing full well I'm not going to wake up dying of thirst...but just in case! I *have* to sleep with a heavy blanket or two light ones...otherwise I don't feel safe. And I absolutely cannot sleep with cold sheets, regardless of how warm or stuff it is in my room...I always warm my bed with a hairdryer. That's just one of my routines that carried over from the winter (obviously).
Symmetry isn't really my thing. I do it with candy and stuff, but when it comes to organizing my hundreds of CDs, or cleaning up my desk, forget it.

Here's mine. I have to put my curling iron on top of my washer so it is the LAST thing I look at as I walk out the door. Otherwise my brain will taunt me and keep running this question over and over in my mind, "Did I leave the curling iron on or did I remember to shut it off?" :-k I did leave it on once, and that was the beginning of the end for me. "Doh!" #-o LOL!

All of my books (2,000+ of them) are indexed according to size & then once the sizes are equal I alphabetize them.
I park my cars according to the years. Oldest at one end the newest at the other.
File Folders & pocket notebooks are my best friends.
I must have 6 Mint Oreos & milk in the same glass each nite. Doublestuf or plain Oreos are no good.
I always put the left sock on the left foot then the left shoe. then do the right in the same way. (been doing that for years)
I take my bath at a certain time each nite.
Model cars in my display cases are exactly one inch apart - which I measure.
In closing- not sure if I suffer from OCD or am just 'particular'..But I hate changes in my routine or planned itenirary.
The only spur of the moment thing I like is sex!!!

Man, I wish I could channel some of that trait from you to me to equalize things a little. I try and try to be on time but it is exceedly difficult for me. At work I do all right because I have a boss who needs things done on time, so I do like you and get there early to make sure I'm on time, but unless there is a large negative contingency staring me in the face I can't do it. Well, even then it's tough.

I'm like this too: all my CDs, DVDs and games have to be in the case with the label the correct way. Also, I won't throw away any of the "promotional" materials that come with them (like, some CDs come with ads for the label, some games come with ads for other games by that developer), and even have to keep the super-thick "warning" booklets that come with most games these days.
I used to have a real problem with locking the doors before I went to sleep too: I'd go through the house, probably 10 or so times before bed, making sure that all the doors were locked. I finally have gotten in the habit of never unlocking them (unless I really need to), so I don't worry about it....
Also, lightswitches are a huge thing for me. Most of the lights in my house have 2 (or more!) switches that control them, and each one has to be in a certain position, or I get confused as to which one controls which...
I'm sure there's more, but it's way to early to think about it yet!

From what I have read there is a danger line with OCD. When the day comes that you find you are counting while doing normal daily tasks....thats the line.... look out and seek help.

I've seen some really disturbing stuff concerning OCD and I hope to god I never get that bad. I have my issues with things being particular but I don't think it would kill me if I had to change it, and the day it really affects me badly I know to get off my arse and see someone about it!!!

If you want to see a movie that does a really good job at taking an HONEST (as in, not comedic) look at living with OCD, I suggest you rent "Dirty Filthy Love". It's a love story about two people who have OCD, in different forms, and how they survive while dealing with a disease that keeps them from living "normal" lives... And, it's a beautiful love story on top of it (spoken from someone who HATES love stories), which makes it a little easier to watch.
