ESHcemetery told me about this one.  Apparently the highest tower of central admin was struck by lightning yesterday and caught fire.  Thankfully, damage was very minimal.  This was posted on Kirkbridebuildings.com

Thankfully it was put out before much damage was done,   but I watched the video (7 minutes) and they still hadn't got the water on it by the end.    They're hanging up there amidst thunder and lightning, brave guys!

Whatever damage there ended up being, I hope they repair or at least patch it, rather than let water into the building season after season after season like we would here in Massachusetts. Some demo contractor is probably already salivating that the repair cost will make reuse of the building incrementally less likely.

My friend is driving to Grand Forks for the weekend so she's going to swing by and find out what's what for me.

So far, damage looks like it's limited to the top point of the tower (other than water damage that can and likely will be cleaned up).

They got VERY lucky indeed.  Having been there to see it in all its glory, I'd be so heartbroken if it burned as badly as Hudson did.

I drove by Fergus Falls on the 18th, 2 days after the tower was struck by lightning. I have no idea what it looks like inside, but here are some pics of the tower: (hopefully someone already HAS patched that hole, I might go up there again next week and I'll swing by and see if anything has changed)

Hope they fix it soon.  Man that building is gorgeous.  The video made me nervous!  Took them forever to get up to the tower then the water never did hit it in the video!

I'd love to tour that Kirkbride, but the inside is quite ugly seeing as they painted it the same as the exterior... Roll Eyes

No, they didn't.  It's been "modernized" in many places but central admin is quite intact and the original paint colors as when it was built at the turn of last century.
