Please excuse the rant, I watched our football team defeated and kicked out of the world cup today. Therefore I am in rant mode. Not to mention a little squiffy!

I LOVE rants!  But what does "squiffy" mean?

It means sort of drunk! It was used way back in the early to mid 1900's.

E.G, "I say Albert, are you squiffy old boy???"Cheesy

I'm not drunk though, just......merry! Though I shouldn't be...half the country is on the verge of nervous breakdown!

Ho hum, que sera, sera! God, is that even spelled right?  :?

It's out of control here too Sian.  It's not Christmas time- it's Holiday time,  don't say the Pledge of Allegiance in school, it may offend, etc...
We even had a school in Mass. ban the kids from wearing Halloween costumes and having a party because a few parents thought it was offensive,  heres a thought, let your kid stay home that day.  don't ruin it for the rest of the kids, right?
While I totally agree with being Politicaly Correct the way Lynne described it, there is always those few who have to take it to the extreme, and their usually the ones who complain the loudest

Oh let's not forget that we have people here who want "In God We Trust" removed from our money....  So it won't offend people.

So.... Does this mean I can have "May Contain Peanuts" removed from the can of nuts for the folks who have peanut allergies.

or
Can I have " Do not flip container over"  removed from the BOTTOM BACKSIDE of the tv dinner because that's where some jackass printed the cooking directions?

Honestly. I'm offended at the directions that have to be there for the morons who lack intelligence.

( I realize they aren't just there for the morons.... I'm just pointing out that someone could get offended by dumb labels)

Its ridiculous Kathy my dear,

I can't even take my kids to see Santa in his grotto because it upsets people! That used to be one of the highlights of christmas in my opinion!

What do these councillors think they are doing??? I have asian friends whose family always included christmas as one of their holidays! They used to give us yummy sweets at Diwali and we used to make them a card!

What is the world coming to??? Merry bloody christmas one and all!!!

And as for hallowe'en, Its not exactly popular over here but I used to love knocking the doors when I was a kid and taking my little bro (when he was little!) around the neighbourhood. If people didn't want to open their doors then fine, but why spoil a kids fun? We had an old lady open her door once and she had nothing to give us. We had gone as cats and we were missing tails because we couldn't find anything to make them with. The old lady made us our tails out of old stockings and sent us on our way! It was the highlight of our night because instead of looking like nutters with whiskers we actually looked like cats!

Bah humbug to those that think its ok to cancel out religious occassions for the sake of others. I never forget what christmas is about.

We oughta have a PC rant thread!  LOL

I hate PC. Like when you call someone a black person & they say "I'm african american"

Ok I'm a German-British-Dutch American.

They changed the state flags of certain states because it had Confederate flag roots, which is solely meaning - a derivative of the Confederacy nothing more.

or it's not handicapped anymore- it's "Limited Mobility"- which is not really a bad word, just takes getting used to. I grew up with 2 handicapped relatives & they always made the best of it, going thru a McDumpsters drive thru in his wheelchair etc....

How cool is that! Did they allow them through???

I had a friend who tried to walk through once. Didn't go down well! :?

I don't mind changing the way I speak for the sake of spineless politicians and governments and to just keep the peace but I would never change my beliefs. I would no sooner offend someone by calling them half caste than stop my kids celebrating christmas.

If people don't like xmas decorations/music/cards/meanings then don't pay attention. The same way I don't take offence to being called white. God, if we wanted to we could kick up a fuss and demand that we are classified as "peachy-skinned" or "slightly tanned"!!!!

What about terrorists who come and preach hatred to our countries and then claim that they can't be sent home because they will be persecuted! The UK pat them on the back and give it "there there, you're ok here with us" while they are out telling there little bomb-happy friends that its ok to hate the country that feeds and waters them!!! Are any of you guys familiar with Abu Hamza?Huh

Its a very very mad world.

Does anyone have a soapbox I could borrow.....Lynne......anyone?Huh

Jeebus, Lynne, you should come to the uk!!!

P.C has gone mad!

Some of our council workers were banned from having england flags on their vans and cars in case it offended different ethnic groups.

Companies are not allowed to send out christmas cards that say "Merry Christmas" in case they offend ethnic minorities.

Some towns banned christmas decorations so as not to offend yet more people.

That sounds very overboard to me.   How is it correct to sacrifice one person's religious freedom or holiday for another's?  In all honestly, the whole business of making everything "PC" is getting exceedingly silly, since I'm not sure how banning Christmas decorations will help people celebrate Kwanzaa.

I don't know why we can't just respect all holidays...

However, I can also respect that this movement did have some very good roots, and has helped in a lot of ways.  But, when I open up my morning newspaper and see a letter berating them for calling Bipolar Disorder a mental illness when they were only trying to inform the public about it, makes me lose a lot of faith.

I agree Snowdrop hun,

the world is slowly getting worse and worse.

There isn't alot we can do about it though, Political Correctness is getting more and more bizzarre and I suppose the public will have to deal with that.

How are you feeling now? Are you feeling better?

The only people who use the terms "PC" and "politically correct" are people who use the terms to say they are not "PC" or "politically correct."  Furthermore, the PC concept was erroneously identified with "liberals."  Josef Stalin was the originator of the term "politically correct," and he was anything but "liberal."  There was a brief period in the late '80s when Stalinists on college campuses (many of whom had the delusion they were "liberal") spoke of PC with no sense of irony.  By 1992, PC was a joke.

Anyway, the epithet "retard" has never been anything but derogatory.  It is not like "idiot," "imbecile," and "moron," which were once used in a frank attempt to classify people with various degrees of mental disability.  "Mental retardation" and "mentally retarded" were in the vernacular by the mid-20th century.  "Retard" is just a mean truncation.

As we say in Massachusetts, "Hey ree-tahd!"
