The first photo is just breath taking! So glad to hear they will be preserving that exquisite style too. Thanks for sharing this.

I second that.

I think it's great that they're restoring it instead of turning it into something else.
Otto
Agreed!

This is definitly a very uniquely designed theater, I have not seen anything remotely close to this place.Way Cool!

I love old theaters. Back in the late 70's there was a theater that was slated to be demolished in Hammond Indiana, and I was lucky enough to be able to go in and look around. It was a theater from my youth, where I use to go to watch movies. A lost treasure each one that is torn down.
Bob
I agree with Bob. There's something about old movie theaters that I just love and can't get enough of. Especially the room with the projection equipment is what I love the most. I'm glad to see they're restoring more of them rather than tear them down. There was one in Schenectady NY called Proctors that, like most others, fell into disuse probably in the late 1970s or 80's but they restored this one and it's magnificent! They have all kinds of shows there now along with running movies on it's giant screen. I miss the old theaters that had the 30' x 90' CinemaScope screen, now they're all chppped up into little screens. For someone that's never seen a true CinemaScope picture on a REAL wide screen, you haven't lived.

Awesome photography.
Wallpaper please!

Ooooh lovely! What an old theater! There is something very majestic and yet a little spooky about places like these...you wonder how many souls are still hanging around here, still playing their parts in a play long ended...

Sorry...too much Ghost Hunters and Paranormal State lately. :D Great pics Mr. Motts! I was starting to get serious withdrawals here! I was going back to this site every day at least 3 times a day to see if anything new was added. Our 12 year old called me a "junkie" lol. :) I think I will live with that. :D

so glad they are restoring this and not turning it into a 7-11. the world has too many 7-11's and not enough of these.
andrew
Absolutely jaw dropping. This kind of old world craftsmanship is simply not seen in today's horrific cracker boxes. The lack of graffiti & vandalism may have been a factor in the decision to restore it. Just saying... =8-)

Knowing that they're restoring this piece of artwork makes so friggin' happy. So much amazing work has been lost to time. These pictures are amazing, though I'm quite sure they don't do it justice, even a bit.
RJ
Amazing! What a magnificent place. It's hard to believe there's no *$%%^# graffiti.I'm SO glad they're going to restore this piece of art.
Thanks for posting this Mr. Motts; I was going into withdrawals, too.......

Beautiful photos!

Gorgeous. Such elegant, ornate work. Very happy to read that it is being restored to its former glory. That is as it should be!

Absolutely stunning!!! I am beyond excited to hear this beautiful old place will be restored! I love all of these pics, Motts. Thanks!
Kathy W.
Wow, very cool---I hope they do it justice!! Hey Motts, if you're taking requests, I'd LOVE to see you do a 1000 pic spread of Grosinger's =)
Colleen
That's quite a place!
I'm very happy their not going to simply tear it down.
An old theater such as this one is irreplaceable.
Going there just to soak in all the details is reason enough to go.
Never mind what the film might be.

when was it built? it's magnificent! it's a shame that out of 10 of these 9 get destroyed, thankfully this isn't one of them!

Fabulous photos, especially the first one of the two figures on the wall. It seems like a lot of the inside was in red? Or is the lighting used when photographing? Great shots, beautiful theatre. Thanks Mr. Motts.

Wow! The architecture is just beautiful. Just amazing photos.

beautiful! so glad to hear it will be saved!

Searching for older theatres is how I found this site in the first place several years ago. This is the best! I really wish places had saved more of these. This one really is in good shape.
Mike
Oh my word, Motts absolutely beautiful photos!
Bly
Nice photos Motts. Great to hear that they are restoring it. I wish we could see the after pictures too. I bet it'll be beautiful when there done with it. Its great that they are restoring it instead of tearing it down. Too many places have come and gone. Great this isn't one of them.

Wow this place is amazing with its detail and former opulence that still comes though. Some how and this might sound a little strange but it reminds me of the inside of a bee hive. I can imaging theses enormous bees buzzing around in there. I think it is the pattern on the ceiling that inspires this thought in me.

Im just surprised it took so long to consider restoring this. As opposed to many of the more industrial and institutional ruins you have photographed, this has plenty of apparent value. I would love to have seen the space over its 30+ years of abandonment.
SampsonWilcox
I am so glad they are restoring this place. Its in good condition considering how long its been abandoned. I want to see it when its done. Hi Debbie, we need to check out some theaters!

I grew up down the street from the Kings. Used to go all the time, very happy to hear it's being restored. I found some more info here

This is just great that they will restore it and not level it. Great work as always ,Motts

Wow! It's gorgeous. I'm so glad to hear it's going to be restored in the original style - to many places get torn down.
caseopaya
That looks like such a stunning place! Really good to hear it will be restored and not torn down to make some hideous shopping center.
My first thoughts are it looks very 'moulin rouge'.
discoKitten
I am estatic that they are saving it. It is a real treasure and I am glad that they realized that before it was to late to save.
Patricia
This is a really nice rococo loft-box theatre and I'm glad to hear that it is to be restored. As a performing arts center, the owners/operators will certainly use it for stage performance, but probably not too many films.

Nice work Motts--as always.

My breath caught when that first picture showed up on screen. I agree that it's fantastic that this is being preserved. I might have to take me a trip to Brooklyn in a few years! :')
potbellynine
Does anyone know the photographer of these works? I'm planning a thesis on abandoned building photography but can never find the names listed when I look at works, its a shame they are not honored for their beautiful works
Janaya
Reading more on this page, I've realized the answer to my question will probably not be answered, for legal reasons I imagine. It's a shame we have to keep secret those who record for us what is plain to see, yet they would be punished for :(
Janaya
Janaya, the photographer's information is listed elsewhere on this site. His UrbEx handle is "Motts" but his name is Tom Kirsch. I am sure if you contact him through the links provided, he can assist you with information for your thesis. He does not provide locations or directions to these places he photographs, but his exceptional work is copyrighted.

Hope this helps... and Motts, this is a gorgeous place. Awesome that it will be preserved.

I'm not a dress wearing gal, but this places makes me want to don a gown, gloves and glass slippers for an evening.

Great shots Motts, you can almost hear the bustling chatter of past theatre goers in those first two shots.
Felyne
These old theatres were often equipped with gigantic Barton style organs. Our town just restored our theatre and organ. Magnificent! Not as ornate as the Velvet Palace, but lovely just the same.
Colleen
To see the beauty in destruction is something that is so fascinating. Yet, to think that such beauty can be ignored at times is a dismal thought as well. I dunno...
Jon
Wonderful news about the restoration efforts! Glad to see it getting repuropsed.
Gustybv
The 1st, 3rd, and 6th photos would make some awesome desktop background. the 1st is just interesting with the colors. the 3rd with an amazing depth to it. and the 6th with a deep depth and the underside of the balcony transitioning from the background to the foreground.

Wow,lovely theatre! Beautiful :)
I love it how they want to restore it,not demolish it.

I wanna go there if its restored!
???
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........... spooky......
June

Your Photography skills and your explorations are superp.
But please, just share them in hi res and don't put watermarks.
I don't think it's a solution If someone is going to use your work without permission. It's just messing up the images.

Thanks for what you are doing.

I wonder what kind of stories the walls could say
if the walls could talk.

The movie theatres of today are nothing more
than four walls and a ceiling.
