As bad a shape as parts of her were in, her sun bridge was gorgeous up to the very end. She will be missed. RIP old girl.

Wow, that really is sad. Obviously it must have been beyond repair (I hope anyway...) so it had to come down, but it's such a shame.

I just hate when buildings are torn down, even if they can't be repaired. That could have sat there and crumbled peacefully. It could have become even more beautiful.
I understand that people often do the wrong thing in abandoned buildings, and aren't often careful, but people will do the wrong thing wherever they can and are quite often unsafe, so I don't see why these places have to be torn down for that reason. :(

I hate to see this these buildings torn down too. I think every effort should be made to preserve them as they are filled with history and are often quite beautiful

This was one of my favorites. I am really sorry to see her go. :-(

I remember playing baseball in the shadow of that building. That was a long time ago, but the memories are still there. Another icon lost in time. Godspeed, Taunton. Godspeed.

I agree that sunbridge is always what I think about when I recall Taunton State Hospital. I'm sure this place had many stories within its walls .....now it will be silenced forever. How sad. Thanks for all the pictures Motts.

Is that a train track? Where did that "tunnel" lead to and what was it for? Also, the next pic with the hole in the floor. Was the hole there for a reason or just dilapidated?
Weezer
I rod that most of the U.S psychiatric hospital are being demolished those past month...A shame!!
But you are keeping those places in memories with your beautiful pictures!!! Gongratulation!

The basements had small rail line for moving laundry carts underneath the very long and winding building. I've seen them in other Kirkbride buildings (Dixmont, Danvers, etc).

Not sure how the hole formed, perhaps someone put their foot through the soft floor.
Motts
I allways liked the curved hallways. It's a bummer they're tearing her down like they're doing with the rest of the kirks. It's kind of a bummer.

Mr. Mott I love all your photos. I have such a facination with all these old buildings. It's a shame they are all in ruins, the beauty of what they once were is breathtaking. I hope someday to have the chance to explore one myself but up until then thank you for doing what you do . You truly are an artist. Keep up the good work!

regarding old buildings and their destruction....YAY to motts for keeping them alive!

As Massachusetts plans to close Westboro State Hospital (200 patients living there) by April it is poignant to see these pics and remember the hayday of State Hospitals...a home to some and a prison to many. While I try not to romanticize their existence, the architecture was beautiful and the decaying legacy is captured wonderfully in your photos, Motts. Thanks for this new gallery.

Places like this should be preserved, not destroyed. It's such a shame. America is so wasteful. Always tearing beautiful old things down and putting up ugly new things. jw, are there any efforts being made to preserve it?

Dear Mr. Motts,
I love your work, but I do miss the stellar titles you has on the photos.

Modern society has a need to erase the "unpleasant" aspects of our history, but then will likley repeat it.

Although these times were as unpleasant at the patients were, these asylums and hospitals remind us that we had a history of very interesting medical procedures that should remain for nature to "pull them back" to their original state and to remind us just how far we've gome with modern medical procedures and conditions. All asylums around the world will be greatly missed and cherished.

Is this place totally gone now? Or are they still doing demolitions?

I have too many words and thoughts to express. The previous people did great and I sincerely share my sadness. Of all the smaller Kirkbrides, TSH was by far the most eloquent and richly detailed. Having closed in the early 70's, it remained closest to its roots inside and out . The grand dames of Kirks (Columbus, Pontiac, Worcester, etc.) have lost their favorite little sister.

so like already who likes the new format ?????

Another atrocity by the State in their never-ending charade of destroying historical sites in order to sell the land to condo developers...simply to line the pockets of cash-hungry beaurocrats in the seemingly eternally corrupt Mass Government. Hats off to you Mr. Motts for the continued superb photography of these soon-to-be extinct institiutions.

Motts, have you seen this site? It is heartbreaking and interesting also. They all had a story to tell but didn't get the chance or were unable to communicate well enough to tell it.

There comes a point in time that these building become more of a hazard than anything...the fact that they are let go to get into that position is a crime. I do hope they were able to salvage some of the materials. When I make my first million (lol) I am going to open a salvage company and salvage materials from some of these old places....

As one of the many who got to see the inside of TSH, it really pains me to see it getting torn down. It was my first kirk, and definetly my favorite. The neo-classical architecture in the place really made it quite incredible. RIP Taunton, you were fun. (BUT YOUR FENCE FUCKING SUCKED!)

Thanks so much for these pictures, Motts. My mother grew up about 2 streets away from here, and on a recent visit to the area, we drove through the hospital grounds, and marveled at this amazing building. I would have given anything to get inside and explore; it's depressing that another amazing building is coming down.
At least you've given us all something to look at; a glimpse at we all wish we could have gotten to see in person. :)

TSH appeared to be a country club the first time I drove thru the gates. (1977). I loved the grandness of the grounds, the beauty of the buildings and the rich history of Taunton State.

So sad to see the destruction process. All the recent photos make one believe that the hospital was always in disrepair but it was not. Back in the 70's I strolled the campus above ground and below when weather demanded it. The head of TSH was a very kind man and lived on the grounds in a very unique home. Rest in peace.
