Bri, that would make a good idea for a sci/fi movie. "Attack of the killer engines"

OK, dumb question- are these actual old "brand new" car engines from the original factory? If so, how old do you think they are, decade wise?

I have a question- are the ceiling beams usually thick wood or iron eye beams in those old buildings? Also, are the floors in the hallways hardwood under the tiles, or subflooring? I would assume hardwood since in the old days they did not half-ass things like now. :)

Banister

I did not mean busting it up like hell and taking out chunks illeagally, by the way. I meant to salvage it by full permssion of the owner. :)

Banister

Not only is it relatively easy to salvage a gorgeous piece of woodwork like this staircase, but it is also saving a piece of history. I have seen entire staircases like this for sale at a local contruction salvage depot. I hope preservationists make an attempt to save this and the fireplace in this abandonment before they get destroyed.

The metal protects the door from being scraped up by stretchers and wheelchairs. Otherwise, the door would need to be constantly repainted. Before automatic door openers, the door would be pushed open by the gurney, I think.

I seem to remember a pink powdery soap coming from one like that I saw a long time ago. It was really weird soap, not liquid like today's kind. Kinda like pixie stix powder. Yum!

Safe

weasel

*sigh* I bet that safe is in a dump in a pile of rubble. :( It belongs on display down at the Heinz Regional History Museum. They should have made an effort to create a Dixmont exhibt like the above poster mentioned. The historical signifigance is so great it turns my stomach to know that it will all be forgotten and swept away in time. Kids will see the retail store in the place of the hospital never realizing that they are on land that is as signifigant as a civil war battleground. Greed makes me ill.

Very sorry to hear about that, ???. People like you who mention the people who lived in those walls remind us all how real it all was. We have to keep those memories alive even after these places are gone. Thank you for sharing, take care.

Interesting observation, ChaserOne. I love learning about the old canal systems. So you think this is part of an old aquaduct from an old canal? Neat. That would put it in the area of the 1820's to up to the civil war in age, before trains were the chosen form of transport.

The Grotto

I went to Catholic school for 12 years. These are common structures on the grounds of convents and monasteries. They are prayer grottos, Motts is correct. Usually a statue of a Saint or of Mary is placed inside and it is a place to pray and to reflect in a religious manner. Some places have beautiful flowers and gardens planted around it. Most likey not a building.
