Wash Station

The toilet/sink is used to flush things that are to big to go down a regular toilet. Nursing homes and hospitals use them to clean bed sheets that have a lot of poop, blood or vomit on them before they go through a washer. they're usually called hoppers

all though they're not like that anymore thats were face masks and gowns and gloves are kept so the care givers can put them on before going into a room. now place use a night stand or the cheap plastic storage carts from a place like walmart.

Lost Grandeur

The ways they brought natural light into these buildings is great ... it's become a lost art!

Front Entrance

I happened to find this site by accident. I worked as a teacher/habilitation specialist at Letchworth in 1980 and grew up in nearby Mt. Ivy. As a kid I wandered in the farming buildings where equipment and livestock was once kept. We also happened to get close to a building where residents lived and stared out of the windows. It truly is a haunting place and reminds me of humanity's feeble efforts to do their best at helping. Letchworth was a good idea gone bad.....these photos capture the essence of great hopes that went awry.

Stairwell to Ward A

Pam

I was a nursing student and did my psych. rotation at DSH. After the culture shock and lots of tears( I was only 19 years old), it wasn't so bad. However, A ward was absolutely not for students. We just visited to observe. It was for the female violent patients as well as alot of elderly who probably had Alzheimers. The older women walked around mostly naked-following each other in endless circles ,chanting and incontinent as they walked. Then there was Mary--250 lbs of solid muscle-six feet and a violet streak that was terrifying. She had hacked her sister to death with an axe. It was quite a place !
