MomPink, I would guess the holes are where equipment was anchored at one time, but only a guess. If they mfr. aircraft engines at one time , would be pretty heavy duty work. Happy Holidays to all. Thanks Motts for the new gallery.

I wonder if the light in the ceiling is also ventilation for cigarette smoke? I think there is something like this in Grand Central Station?

Mr. Motts thanks for posting the update about the demolition. Seems strange to post this on Halloween. It is really great that KPPC will live on thru your galleries. All the best to you. THANK YOU!

Sorry about the previous posts incorrect spelling the sentence should read the word "LAUNDROMAT", is/was trademarked by Westinghouse electric.

Last Remarks

It is sad , how many of our posters have ever taken care of the infirm in their home. In the hospital the meal trays come, Housekeeping clean the rooms. Food service gets the food at the loading dock. Then there is the 24 hours of watching someone who may function as a child, that could easily harm themselves or burn the whole house down while you are sleeping. Staff makes beds mops floors and does the laundry. I challenge many of the above to really think about this day after day for months. And all this in an age with no antipsycotic meds...... think about it.

Diaper Room

Often adult diapers are fully opened and placed on top of the drawsheet, Sometimes adults are incontinent of stool and urine when they are extremely ill. Hospitala are not overstaffed they are hard work. Its a convenience for nursing and nursing assistants to quickly freshen a bed without changing all the bed linen, it's not a perfect world you do the "best"" you can with what is available.

nvusofmotts, You are right. Regardless of your faith or beliefs this building has a historical significance simply because of its architectural design. When other lifes are considered, joyous occasions, weddings, and sadly funerals everything you posted is true.

Laundry

Early automatic washers such as this Westinghouse and the 1st automatic washer made by Bendix were the first of the automatics sold in the USA.. These machines were sold in the post world war II years, they lacked the suspension system of modern machines and were actually bolted to the floor, or a slab of concrete in the basement of existing homes, to limit vibration. This desgin continued well into the 1950's as a coin operated machine in neighborhood laundromats.
The word "Laudnomat" is/was trademarked by westinghouse electric.
There are working examples of this machine owned by collectors You can see them on youtube and also at Automaticwasher.org I really think this part of the building was housing for staff at one time. I doubt patients would be expected to do their own laundry.

Stryker Turning Frame

old Lpn

I guess i will add that "repositioning" a trauma victim helps clear lung secrections and prevents pneumonia. As Lynne posted so much in the past prescription drugs helped many psych patients return home or to monitored bungalow living. For you younger folks war time often leads the way to medical advancement. Unforturnately you have a consitent healthy base of mostly healthy adults. WWII, brought us penicillin and led to modern antibiotics. During the Vietnam years we learned the granddaddy of modern burn care. The middle eastern conflicts have brought about modern care for CHI ( closed head injury). SAD to post but very true.

Stryker Turning Frame

old Lpn

Guys Stryker bed frames were often found in "modern burn care centers", I have not finished the gallery but we might see a "circolectric yet".. Mostly these beds have been replaced by modern "alternating pressure pads. On the stryker there was a hole on the top side so the patient could use the bedpan. Of course the top was rotated to the bottom. no torture at all if you have a large body surface area affected, It was/ is, much easier to rotate the patient in the frame , than to have 2 people push and pull a person with painful large body surface area burns. Claudia's information is entirely correct as well. Thanks for posting Claudia.

I am with "BKW", don't forget all those nursing school and radiology graduations. You also have to have a nice place to give presentations to visiting dignitaires. Politicians with medical care facilities in their districts understand, "state and federal funding".

X-ray Creature

Folks, much of this stuff, is leased they become obsolete, parts no longer available etc. The leasing company simply writes it off, in most cases it never actually belonged to the facility. The blue tubing and humidifier etc should of been biohazard bagged, (red bag), I bet when this place did close down, this patient could of been one of the last transferred out, long term "vent" beds are not easy to come by. Thats really the sad part of this great photo. Mott's thank you for the new galleries.

Probably lots of exhaust fans and vents to the outdoors. This process, no doubt created a LOT of coal dust. Grain mills can explode from dust, let alone coal. Motts has captured an era of the worst job in the world, can you imagine the heat, dust, noise. It must of been hell on earth, but then in the 1930's a dollar was a dollar.

On modern "head injuy" units many times patients confused tend to wander, usually to get to the bathroom. Of course nowdays lucky patients in such a delicate state, have a family member overnight with them. shocking yes..... the reward is when they recover and again lead a normal life.
