the explanation fo the restraints were interesting. The drawing up top made the whole thing awesome. I could use these at my job, i would be fired tho since any type of restraints is forbidden. Even tho it would help from getting bit, punched, headbutted.. things like that

Sun Lamp

mary

the sun lamp could also be early treatment for patients with Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) most people when dx'ed with that have special lighting. There is a chance that S.A.D wasn't around when this hospital was up and running- that i am not sure of.

Styrofoam

These were water pitcers for drinking.Everything had names on it so that your roommate didnt get the wrong picher when they filled them.Back in the day they would reuse the pichers for water.Sputem cups were much smaller. They dated them so that they could be sure to use clean ones every so often weekly or monthly i forget which.

Your site has brought back many memories for me.My husband was hospitalized in 1972 for T.B.he was not allowed off of the ward he was in.He was threatened with jail if he left. But was given weekend passes. My husband is now 60 and healthy and incidently never been in trouble with the law or been to jail. There was a push in the 70s to keep these hospitals and patients like my husband were used to fill them up to try and keep them open.It was a sad place. They made crafts and worked puzzles and played cards. The hardest part was the lack of respect because like aids people were afraid andfear and ignorance are our worst enemies.

i work the the developmentally disabled in NY and my guess it that the windows were there most likely for the staff to watch in on the students at they took baths.. perhaps there were higher functioning developmetally disabled that were able to wash them selves independantly they just need to have an eye kept on them

I am 55 and went to this park as a 12 year old with my 10 year old cousin (I think these dates are close). I was shocked when I saw it for the first time after so many years in 1997, with the sign still up and the strip mall next to it. I remember the parking lot in front of the sign being all dirt and very large. I thought of it as a place for younger children and yet still enjoyed myself. I am thankful to the owners of Clark Farm for any restoration they are able to do which will save a piece of my late childhood.

Morgue

mary

i would just like to say that i agree with lynne post.......i hate goth-fags.......it really isnt a laughing matter

now for me its a different story, i have grown up around death and morgues...my aunt is a trauma nurse and my dad is still a mortition.....i have seen some very interesting and some very horrific things concerning death.....i dont drool over death..... i embrace it and set out to learn everything about it...... which is why i am following in my fathers footsteps.....

thank you lynne for making that valid point evident!

I also worked at Pennhurst and remember this TA class and poster. I also know Marcia very well. The sheep were named after the staff that attended the class, not the "residents". And in agreement with her,the class was stupid as was the instructor. Orchid Lunar--I've read several of your comments throughout this Pennhurst tour, and you are WAY OFF on your assumptions. Calm down. Pennhurst was NOT the horrid place that it's being portrayed.

As a kid, back in the late 1940's and early 1950's we used to have a Girl Scout Highjinks at this place. There were still children living here and we could talk to them and play with some of them when we were off on our own. I remember how strange this place seemed as a child.
