Padded Room

I guess it IS kinda cruel to put a handle on the inside of the door of the padded surgery room.
Those poor horses have hooves, and can't possibly open it! (sigh) What asses, whoever designed those doors!

Yeah, Eric I know. and it is sad that rooms of this design also were used for people,
without a way to get out. I was only making an observation with my above post, not being
inconsiderate of the poor patients that had to stay in this room for extended amounts of time.

Ok I guess if I did look around a little bit I COULD find something else to explore, but like a lot of ppl on this site I want to see old hospitals, asylums, worlds I am very unfamiliar with.<stamps foot and whines> :) I did go to Guthrie (former comment) about 2 weeks ago, and was able to get in only b/c they were having a wedding in the once abandoned, now beautifully restored orphanage. ( I pretended to be apart of the wedding planners and snuck off, but was unable to get many pics b/c most of the doors were locked. ;) Visiting the old abandoned hospital down the street however is the perfect ticket to jail, for the Oklahoma PRI group has live camera feeds in the place which police frequently check for trespassers. I didn't know this at the time so thank goodness our "tour guide" forgot how to get to the old hospital. =-o Anyway, there are other blds I am looking at going to that seem very interesting, can't wait!! Oh yeah, if anyone wants to see the pics of the orphanage, email me: lil_T_376@hotmail.com

*in regard to my above post:
I learned from another pic comment you made Motts, that the prison had only been closed down about a year, and the hospital since 1993. oops my bad. I guess that's why it still looks great here...

There is an IFC-MR facility in the town I grew up in. They used to have haunted trails set up for Halloween and ppl would drive their cars through while monsters and ghosts and whatever tried to scare ya. They had a lot of residents that lived on the premises dress up and play a lot of the parts. It was cool, and actually pretty scary, as they would seemingly jump out of nowhere and scare you, or some would even try ot pull u out of the car!!!

I don't think most ppl who are posting are trying to accuse anyone now days of abuse. I think they are responding to emotion that these wonderful pics Motts has taken. I think that everyone has agreed that abuse has occured and, sadly, will continue to occur most likely due to human nature. It is a cruel world we live in and it is always bettered by the caring ppl that HAVE actually worked in the MH field. That being said, yes, there could possibly be sensational journalism at work, yes there could be influencing of the sort going on, and no, no one said it was the RULE, and not an exception. When ppl read the websites posted here, (the autobiography, the interviews, etc.) it draws a lot of emotion, and I don't think it is meant to attack anyone. it's just hard to grasp, and try to keep from jumping to conclusions. I do not think it is wrong for ppl to form opinions about WHAT WENT ON AT PENNHURST. That is the real argument that everyone has lost sight of. Not whether all the healthcare workers in the MH field are sadistic. Abuse has been documented, yes it is sad, ppl need to do something about it, and a loud standing ovation needs to be given to ppl like Lynne and others who have chosen to help these people.
"On the other hand, there is a lot of knee-jerk responses too. The more defensive posters seem to bristle at pretty much *any* mention of the abuses that went on. They're not denying they happened, for sure, but instinctively lashing out at anyone bringing them up - even reasonable posters.

Seen a number of posters explicitly state that they're sure that there were many good people working there too, before referring to the gruesome things that happened, and all getting the verbal slap round the ear anyway.

You just dont seem to hear what the other is saying anymore. Thats most obviously true for the judgemental passers by, who are all hit-and-run posters anyway, but also for the other side."
Joost, I could not have said it ANY better!!! Thank u!!
BTW, I could safely say that I am new at this site, but u can look at the other locales and see I am not ur average "hit and run' poster.

"And then to assume that every single person was then sexually abused and tormented is just as sick."

Well, Lynne, this post is about two years late, but I still feel very compelled to post a comment regarding your above rant... I have been reading most of the comments put on Opacity, including yours, and I have to say that as hurtful as it may be to you to think ppl here were tortured and abused, sexually, mentally, and physically, you need to get a grip. I know u work in a facility and have at lots of others. You may not abuse your patients, (the world applauds u for not), but I guarantee you someone else does. Why is it so hard for you to imagine this abuse took place here and also on so many other institutional grounds? Of course there will be exceptions, but according to all the websites Motts posted here documenting the abuse, apparently it was the RULE. For ppl to believe this happened does NOT make them sick or demented. And I believe the person who posted did say "many people," not all.

Not everyone wears rose-colored glasses, and maybe u should take yours off.

Colored Curves

lil t

Motts, I don't think I could have said it better. People like comment on here about how the treatment to these ppl was most likely humane, and I imagine a lot of it was, but it seems like a few individuals will not acknowledge that there WAS in fact a large amount of abuse committed in these institutions, and not everyone is SICK to imagine that it happened and feel sorry for these ppl.

MVH I could not have said it better... I'm 27 but I feel that the world would be a much better place without all the technology. Yes, I love my computer, Internet, video games modern medical equipment, vehicles, cell phones, ipods, etc. but I think that the world relies waaaay to much on all this junk....aside from the medical advances. Yes, it has made our lives so much more simple and better in some aspects but we are now enclosed in our own little boxes.
