after reading old charts I found that many patients were put in these facilities for:

having baby unmarried
stealing
rape victims
"hysteria" (PMS now)
any level of brain damaged child

I worked at tewksbury state and saw some old cement floor rooms with a drain in the center. I was told that some of the patients (severely impaired) were hosed down daily in this room and bowls of food slid in becuase they did not want to get near them. they could not keep clothes on them,

? maybe the insulin stored here for the shock therapies as it had to be refrigerated

motts i love ur work usually but this one and the next one I think are really quite distasteful!

in the uk old fire places in smaller rooms like a bedroom had these small fireplaces whereas in larger rooms like the drawing room (living room) or kitchen had much larger ones to heat a larger space. they are now worth a lot of money for an original one!

these toilets can seen all over mainland Europe and Asia in public places. The western loo seat is thought to be unhygienic in Asia and they are kinda right i suppose, but try using one of these on a boat on a stormy rough day at sea in Thailand! not fun!

eh cameron you have just proved that some people will never progress in helping eradicate the world or ignorance and help let people who have difficulties in life to lead as normal a life as possible in the community whilst there are still people like u in the world using words to label them like you just did!

serenityjane - i know what you mean, her last work with genie i could understand and brought a story to our attention but again i was left feeling where do we draw the line with vandalising old beautiful architecture even if it has got a seedy past.
once captured on film i feel she should have cleaned it off. the same with this. these buildings are a time capsule into the past and should be protected from ruin to show to future generations to tell the stories of the past good or bad!
