What a fascinating gallery! I can see how not knowing the history of this location could lead to all sorts of wild speculation as to its uses. It just seems very out of place.

Great Pics. I audited this facility inside that administration building. Cool building but totally unkept. The acreage for this facility was huge and was prime land. At one time ALL MR patients for the state of Maryland were
patients until other facilities were built around MD.

I agree 100% with Zorb. Behaviour like dropping cement block off the rtoof purely for the sake of destruction is reprehensible.

It's a shame that these beautiful building are left to decay, vandals, and destruction. I suppose people who lived on campus have as many wonderful memories as patients committed there had horrible memories. Some ghastly things were done there, like lobotomies and electroshock therapy.

All-in-all, it's a really cool place rich in history and mystery. I wish I went there when I was growing up on Long Island (Smithtown - only 10 miles away, and clsoe to Kings Park, which I drove through on a regular basis).

The mansions have been leveled since these photo's were taken. There is nothing left of them except rubble. You can see it on Google Earth.

I was just there taking pictures last week and it is completely overgrown with low brush and vines growing up the building now. I posted my pictures on flickr and will add then to the flickr Opacity group.

I lived in philly for the first 18 years of my life. I really disliked that city, but I must say this picture makes it look beautiful.

This building is actually currently owned by the city of buffalo even though it is a tremendous distance from buffalo. A couple years ago they tried to sell it to a logging company for the acreage for pennies but luckily preservationists stepped in and prevented this landmark from being raized.

it was the game facination. the players would roll small rubber balls up wooden ramps from a sitting position. the balls would fall thru one of 24 holes at the top of the ramp that were lined up in rows forming a grid. each hole had its own value. whoever got a block or a full row in his grid first would win the round. the value of the winning holes were added up which determined the value of the prize to be given out.

Chapel

Jim

For Jim H.....Thanks for the refer to the photos of what the place used to look like. The chapel was beautiful! It's a custom that when a church closes the pews and religious artifacts are donated to parishes either renovating existing facilities or building new ones. I hope the materials from Salesian found suitable homes.

The Tower

Jim

Does anyone know what building was in front of the school, closer to the road? It's gone now, except some bits of the stone foundation - an interesting ruin.
Also, who was Dominic Savio? There's a memorial to him on the same knoll as the water tower.
I like the photo, by the way. I have to get out there with my camera, too.

I love the site, all the pictures are amazing.
This one jumped out at me because of the word "SANE". The reason for this is that i believe it may have been my uncle (or one of his friends) that painted that there years ago. When he was younger, he use to do alot of graffiti, and that word he seemed to tag all over the city. He even has it tattooed in that exact text style on his leg. I'll have to show him this picture and see if he remembers if it was him.
Thanks for the awesome pictures, im fasinated with old buildings and id love to visit some of these some day. Jim

Wow, your pictures are chilling and haunting. The corridors and rooms are reminiscent of the old CI Psych Center buildings me and my friends used to wander through when we were kids. Exceptional photos, brought back some old memories.
