Press

gypsy

A mangle was actually the press one would squeeze the material just scrubbed through to get as much water out as possible, via a turn-handle usually on the side of the contraption. It accomplished what the spin cycle does in modern washers. A mangle would usually be attached to the side of an old washing "machine", jutting over the wash basin so that the basin could collect the water. :)

To Die Is Gain

gypsy

It's long seemed to be a New England "thing" to find graveyards in strange places. My mother found parts of one in her backyard in New Hampshire. Perhaps something to do with the inpenetratable ground; for six to eight months out of a year, the ground up there is frozen solid and makes burial -and construction- difficult.
