The Ward

EX Employee

Ok lets get real - This was only one of many buildings therefore it in itself did not house 8000 pts. Just under a 1000 is what the current Shapiro Developmental Center in Kankakee houses in even less buildings that have been renovated to now have bedrooms. What you are looking at was one of the dormatory wings and these buildings were easily renovated to have bedrooms in them now that are quite spacious. Beds were lined up on the wings for the patients to sleep and then in the center of the H shape was the "Day Room."

Anatomy Theater

Ex employee

I spent many days watching them pop open a skull and weigh the brain while having my lunch. Just had to remember not to dunk. seriously. It saddens me to see a piece of history desecrated. When the drugs eat wdeep into the recesses of your gray matter, where will you go? A cardboard box under I-95. Sad.

Auditorium Group Shot

ex employee

This is one of the smaller auditoriums. There were quite a few. The biggest, Fury Ellis Auditorium held nearly 300 people. Byberry had churches, a temple, indoor pools. The tunnels went from Near Somerton, at Philmont avenue to Franklin Mills mall. From Nabisco to the Hilton Hotel. Old patients used to escape and live in there, Some died in there. There are things you don't know. Please be careful

Morgue

Ex employee

There were a mutlitude of Autopsies performed there. the Pathologists kept one open for new hires, so the person giving the tour could open it up. A friend hid in there, When she opened it, she made a comment about it being a mistake, but frank sat up. Fanny pulled the sheet off and told him he was an idiot. But the new employees had left the building. One leaving a trail of PEE.
