Clock Tower Detail

The Other Lynne

The clock tower was going to be a filming location for a Paramount movie produced by Martin Sorcese staring Leo DeCaprio. Unfortunately the timing is off since the new hospital is going to start construction and the state wont allow filming which will take about 6 weeks. Worcester lost this wonderful chance and the clock tower would have been immortalized.

Back

The Other Lynne

Worcester State Hospital strongly resembled Danvers State Hospital. Same type of architecture and sprawling wings on both sides. The fire destroyed most of the wings.
They bricked up what was left. Hopefully this building (the Clock Tower as it is known) and the remaining buildings will be saved when the new hospital is built on the grounds.

I think public entertainment tastes also contributed to it's closing. Traditional parks like Rocky Point and Whalom Park are a thing of the past. The rides are considered tame for today's kids, they want to 250 feet stomach dropping coasters like at Six Flags and the big theme parks.

Session 9 was filmed at the old abandoned Danvers State Hospital (near Boston) that closed up in the 1980s.

The complex is now condos. They kept the admin building and part of the Kirkbride and restored it.

Love those Boston accents :-)

Hey Old Timer,
What is the cleaner you use for the tub? I have a whirlpool bathtub at home. My tub is pretty deep, and it can get difficult to clean especially around the jets.

I took a look at the Avalon Danvers web site and the Administration building and side wings look great, they did a great job restoring these buildings. It is too bad the rest of the buildings got demolished.

I remember this tower in Session 9.

Canada I agree with you. There is no more good old days. They died a long time ago. I seen my childhood drive-in demolished this summer and it broke my heart. I seen wonderful amusement parks like Paragon, Whalom and Rocky Point close up and left abandoned or the land used for condos.

Kids today will never experience the fun of going to a drive -in or a great old amusement park.

Great drive-in shots Motts!
The Edgemere Drive in Theatre in Shrewsbury, MA just got demolished a month ago. Screen, consession stand, ticket booths, and remnants of the old playground reduced to rubble. They are making way for an Over 55 Luxury condo community.

Grounds

The Other Lynne

The memories are still vivid in my mind. The signts and sounds of people having fun. 70s tunes blasting from the Music Express, happy tunes from the carousel. Clake cakes and chowder and stepping into that dining hall for the first time and seeing hundreds of tables. The smell of the ocean, the huge saltwater pool. All memories that are now demolished to make room for luxury condos. :-(

What Is Left

The Other Lynne

Took a drive-by over the weekend and checked it out. Creepier then ever. Looking at the architecture which is incredible, I am really hoping these magnificent buildings get saved when the new hospital is built. Because of the fire back in the 1990s, a portion of a wing or two of the Kirkbride is gone, but the rest was saved. Driving by the newer building gave me the creeps too. It does not look very well cared for. There is a nice new gazebo out front for the patients to sit, that was the object that I seen that gave a bit of comfort to the patients.

I had a nice view of it from my condo window across the lake. It is creepy no matter where it is viewed from!

Staircase

I would not want to be drunk walking down those stairs after a Stella or two! ;-)

The staircase looks like something out of the Titanic or Willy Wonka!

Hi Katrina,
Worc State Hospital was a Mental hospital and still is. The old section has been closed for years (what you see in the photo) but next to it is a newer facility and will be replaced with a state of the art new faclity in a few years.

Crib

The Other Lynne

I remember being in a crib like this when I was at St. Vincent Hospital (Worcester MA) for eye surgery. I was about 3or 4 years old. I can remember there were four cribs in the room I was in and there was a kid about the same age as me. I guess they were not only used for infants.
