I saw this and thought of Dixmont:

T-Shirt: Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price logo on the front. "How May I help you... destroy this community?" and Evil Smiley on the back.

Heck, we could all wear them when we finally have a gathering, at Danvers perhaps?

I see it as well. It is in the bottom third of the photo.

Lyric, thanks for sharing your memories. My grandmother lived in Northern California and I used to visit a covered bridge. That is what first got me interested in UE.

When I was younger we used to be able to legally drive our regular cars over the covered bridge. It was quite an experience.

Where I used to work they left a lot behind, and it wasn't state run. It was just cheaper than doing a full inventory and then moving the things.

In fact, there was so much left behind they reopened the kitchen for some basic cooking.

How strange, until I got to this photo, I was thinking about the lack of graffiti.

I'm with Lynne on this one. The Teeth and what appears to be a set of second human ears freak me out. Adding the eyelashes I wonder if this was a subconscious self-portrait.

One of the best pics I've seen you use to open your gallery. I can't wait to see the rest!

I'm so glad to finally read you are going to be published. I have a good pile of photojournalism books. I'll move them all off the table for yours!

This picture saddens me. Perhaps it is because I just saw Titcut Follies last night so I'm remembering the burial scene...

I really enjoyed this in contrast to your other gallery photos of the cafeteria. Glad you revisited.

I love this quote from AutumnTwin's link ""This is the first time I have ever heard of an institution, which is usually reviled, being celebrated, and the people who worked there and were treated there being honored," says John Talbott, MD,"

Because that is how I see Motts' galleries. As these buildings being celebrated, and with the input of some very informed posters, those who lived here are also honored.

I'm guessing it was so that staff could watch the clients eat, especially if the staff ratio was low. Where I worked we had a little kitchen raised above the dining room in the cottages so that we could always make sure the clients would not choke.

Although we ate at the same table as them, it was easier to get a full view of the dining table from being a little higher up.

"Seeing dead people" is not cool. Some of us can see 'spirits' and it is NOT a gift. It is something we have to carry with us our entire lives. You think its fun walking by a gas station to grab some candy and seeing someone that isn't alive fun? Or when walking to the car during the daytime? Its not fun, its not 'kewl'.

However, that does not mean all of us with this 'gift' can't appreciate building like this any less (or more for that matter) than anyone else here. We don't all go to get doped up and/or drunk and spraypaint the walls. We visit these places just like anyone else, to see the beauty that once was-in the walls and fixtures, in what man has made.

Then again, I'm also the type that will stay the farthest away from tarot cards or ouija boards as well.

I've admired a lot of your galleries from afar at my computer desk but this gallery takes the cake, Motts.

The changes in colors, in upkeep, even all the different types of rooms at Linton State Hospital just fascinate me. It is almost as if a bunch of different galleries were rolled into one-yet they manage to keep the same feel.

Even after checking out your link I'm going to be thinking of Get Fuzzy's Bucky the cat all night.

I wonder what his x-ray looks like?

Jane and Lynne. Wonderful posts. Having worked with developmentally disabled teens I can agree so much. And there are some who do better on the 'inside' than the 'outside'. Someday, I hope, society will find the correct balance. They haven't yet but I give humanity hope.

Thanks Lynne. I remember after the first study came out, a man in my city painted his house that color thinking that no one would break into it because they would calm down. Talk about ugly.

it did repaint it when it was found increased exposure would have the opposite effect. I'm sure the neighbors were happy.

Farewell

StareGirl

Interesting history, Demon Alley aka New City has.

<< The land is owned by the Newark Watershed Commission, and has been abandoned as long as anyone can remember. There is a compelling story of how one madman managed to invite his neighbors on New City Road to his home one night and kill them all in one fell swoop. I haven't seen any news stories to back that up, but historians and local officials do not deny the story, either. >>
