Autoclave

That's good! it will save Lynne & others in the know having to explain the same thing over and over again.

Autoclave

Motts is it worth having a section on this site for an explanation of the various features & fittings?

Rather than having to post them every time someone asks.

Headless Mary

Richard Davies

I've looked at a lot of Mott's galleries & hardly any of the hospitals have a special place of worship.

It seems that all British mental institutions had them, either built into the main building or in the grounds.

Flash Cards

Richard Davies

My first primary school (Ludworth School, Marple Bridge 1982-6) had something like this, but the cards just had a single work written on them.

It took me ages to work out how they worked, eventually a manetic strip came to mind.

Stagnant Playthings

Richard Davies

The toy on the right is a Fisher Price Activity centre.

I think me, my brother & sister & a cousin all had the same one over the years.

It was an earler looking one.

Typewriter Room

Richard Davies

Can't remember the model but I recovered a typewriter from the college I was at 1996-8. It would have otherwise gone in a skip.

It was a daisywheel unit that worked OK apart from the left hand margin kept jumping around & I didn't have any instructions to help me. It was handy for typing labels that are a pain to do on computers unless you're lucky,

I went when I was clearing out my room as I needed the space.

Another thing the closed British hospitals have a lot of are dial phones, I don't know if Motts has found any.

TV

Richard Davies

I remember when I was young I went with my Mum to Manchester Airport to pick my Dad & spotted some TVs like the ones mentioned by Joseph. Very small B&W screens with a fuzzy picture.

Ward

Richard Davies

Is that a boarded up serving hatch on the left? or where a notice board was removed?

Lost

Buxton Chairs are similar, named after the Spa town in Derbyshire, not too far from me.

Fire Door

What is the small door on the left for?

Underneath

Richard Davies

There was British hospita called Rauceby which was taken over by Army & the service tunnels were large & clean enough to use as temporary wards.

The thing dangling down is a either a light fitting or possibly a clock.

Mossy Corners

Richard Davies

It looks like there was once something like a display board on the wall.

Ystafell Fwyta

You can get Welsh Scrabble sets, but with the scores adjusted & some pairs of letters on one tile as they in effect count as one letter, like CH & LL in Spanish.

I guess a flash would attract too much attenion.

Patient Belongings

Richard Davies

There's a few suitcase left in Cane Hill & other British places. From reading a former superintendant's account patients were almost banned from keeping much, even the more able ones weren't allowed any storage facilies on the grounds they would just hoard junk. This was changed in later years.

Clown Picture

Richard Davies

Some clowns have a strange screeching laugh that can be scary. I remember reading about someone Irish American who's parents banned them from going to a cirus because they considered clowns to be part of some ani-Irish propaganda.

I also noticed the Peanuts style of this.

Youtube had lots of old Sid Davis style information films from the time homosexuality was considered a desease. The seem too daft to take serious these days,

Padded Room

Richard Davies

I've got Asperger syndrome & was interested to see a programme about Temple Grandin a while back. She nearly ended up being certified at a young age, which is fairly worring.

From Urbex & other British abandoned building sites the use of padded cells in the UK was mainly phased out in the 1960s due to the development of new medical treatment. There are one or two places that still had them when they closed.

Re: Old medical equipment, someone has mentioned elsewhere that removing some of this stuff will cost more than any resale value.

Ironer

Richard Davies

Almost all British mental hospitals had on-site laundries, urbex has a few good pictures of old equipment like this.

If the hall was used for different things then I guess the seats were stacked against the walls, & have been removed.

Theater

Richard Davies

Most British Mental Hospitals had main halls, which were often used as a dining area for more able patients.

Back Stairwell

As well as laying down casks of whiskey here, is there any distillation equipment? This looks very interesting with all it's stranged shaped piping in copper.

That explains the whiskey barrel racks.
