I can picture a new, nervous young steel worker getting LOST in this enormous place!!!

Never again will those faithful indicator lights glow their appointed colors. Melancholy...

You pick up on the tiniest details, Motts... that's what makes you so amazing. It's the little things that just round out the whole experience. You ROCK. I mean, looking over the overwhelming enormity of this abandoned site, the utter grandiosity of the mill... you in your genius managed to capture some tiny little labels on a few valve handles. And it's perfect.

Blaster

So, if cold blast furnaces were generally obsolete by the early 1900s, I guess this particular control box-thingie is even older than the majority of abandoned equipment at this site overall? The furnace it is tied to must have been out of use for decades before the rest of the plant ceased operating.

Hard to imagine something that could produce such incredible, intense heat is now so utterly cold and deathly silent. Awesome!

Last Look

Rekrats

I could almost cry, knowing there will be no more imagery from this brilliant work of architectural art. Thank you, so very much, Motts, for this incredible gallery by which to remember this staid, gorgeous Kirkbride.

AAACH! I had no idea Motts had a deviantArt. Cooooool.

Marked

Rekrats

Possible, denise. Considering the age and decomposition of other parts of the building, compared to the relatively recent-looking mattress and sheet. Other wings have beds that are little more than rusty, crumbling frames. Little chance that a mattress and sheet would have held up at all in such conditions.

Wouldn't it be totally bizarre if someone recognized themselves in that old, once-loved photograph?? It's possible that child is still around, as an older adult, somewhere.... with a distant memory of a cold winter day and a snapshot that was taken, given to a relative housed in "one of those places," a family shadow very rarely spoken of.

Lens Fog

Holy crap! That was a fire hazard from hell! How miserable that must have been, for staff and patients alike.

Wide

Rekrats

Love those wide Kirkbride hallways, with the rounded edges, giving everything an airy, soft look. (At least when it was kept up and in use.)

Sisters

This had to be admin, or the nurse's wing, or maybe doctor-residents living quarters. Patients had nothing as nice as curtains in their rooms, for pretty obvious reasons.

But they are very surreal there, hanging forgotten for so very many years.

Autumn

I love the boarded-up fireplace. It's... so final, somehow.

Where has Lynne been, anyway? Haven't seen her around in AGES.

Best lonely chair shot.... EVER!

(Okay, the fact that it has a caption made it really cool, at least. Top ten, easy.)

Exit

Rekrats

Mold or fire residue?

I notice that EXIT signs of today are typically made of plastic. This and the others like it are metal, complete with rust. Seems like everything is made on the cheap these days.

Squares

Rekrats

It looks like a thick film of dust that has, for some reason, been drawn in. Even if condensation forms on the window, unless it starts to drip or run, the pattern in the underlying layer will hold. Why someone would have made a replica of the window squares, though, is beyond me. Some subtle attempt at humor, or a demonstration of some sort, is all I can think of. We'll never know for sure.
