What a coincidence, there's a Barry Farms here in Barry, South Wales.

Doing Time

Kinda reminds me of that scene in American History X when Edward Norton steps out of his cell and realises he's the only white guy on the block.

I couldn't contain myself again longer. I view this website pretty much on a daily basis and haven't been able to gather the courage to make comments, but after viewing this gallery I absolutely have to. This gallery is beautifully captivating and I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all the comments. The pictures capture the history and decay of the place perfectly and I echo the comments of others about the area allowing it the place to rot away.

Here in South Wales in the UK, we have many historic and beautiful places falling into disrepair and it's a crying shame that councils and local authorities plug all their efforts and tax payers money into horrendously ugly (and unnecessary) new buildings rather than maintaining and restoring the fascinating, abandoned buldings that are already here.

End of rant :-)

Joe: I'm thinking it might be the weather too, it rains most of the year over here, so there'll be a lot of damp damage probably.

Scorched

Rachel

My nan's house is about a ten minute walk away from here, I don't know how many times I walked past here to go feed the ducks in the pond when I little.

It's a good job you got these photo's too, because it's all gone now, they've been knocking it down this year and last year. I think there's flats there now.

Problems

Rachel

Maybe they jammed straw in where there were gaps in the framing? Kind of like an insulator? Sounds fire-hazard-arriffic to me.

Cotton Balls

Keep in mind a lot of patients may have been un-wed pregnant women that gave birth while staying here. Their babies would have been cared for just as they were because there would not have been anyone on the outside to take in the child. I imagine they would later be adopted if the mother was not fit to care for the child.

This is in russian, because it was written while the war I guess. So we had a lot of russians in our country who used to work in hospitals and stuff.

Ward

Rachel

The abuse they endured is enraging. That's why we shouldn't ostrcize people with mental issues. Seems to happen because no one is paying attention. There's more inspections and safety gaurds these days. I think. Been There Worked There, what's your take on how the place treated people?

Basketball Court

MJ- I thought your comment about the patients playing pocket pool was really slanderous of the people who had to brave "mental illness" and this institution, who often experienced dehumanizing sexual, physical abuse from those "sane" employees. The same people who were supposed to be helping them. Thankyou Motts, Radical Ed, etc. for sharing this place, and for leading me to the story of Anna Jennings. I think it's important to understand how people are shaped by their world. And you call them "nuts" MJ! errrrg! I always wonder about the experiences these places have witnessed. The stories of peoples lives, it's all history...
