Your story reminds me of a story I heard about some thieves who'd patiently watched some engineers lay miles of cable for a new building (I think) before sneaking in at night and pulling it all out.

Sadly for them it was fibre optic cable! (Probably damaged and useless after they'd ripped it out, too).
