I have no idea.

True about the grated floors, I didn't think of that...

Thanks; no there was enough natural light for this photo coming from the turbine hall on the left.

Yes there was a rung ladder leading down into each of the bins, but if one fell into an empty bin they would probably be hurt pretty bad as they were quite deep.

I don't recall any particular odor or noises; it's a bit tough to remember after a few years...

Thanks MamaToFiveInPA; the Eastern State School was leveled some time ago... I don't know the date offhand, but definitely before 2005. A Wal-mart sits on the old site at the moment.

ESS was very close to Byberry, which was also demolished, but I managed to document it a few times before it came down.

Here's a post of an ex-employee likening the conditions in the Orleans / Walters Building to the bedlam at Byberry:

There's lots of things that can go wrong; I've had just about all of those issues occur somewhere (except for the channeling)... they can be thought of as learning experiences; eg. how do I prevent this from happening again? I think it's best to keep the dangers in mind, but not to worry about it so much you don't have a good time.

Well I'm glad to say there aren't many bugs in abandoned places above ground, so you can scratch that one off your list! :-)

Interesting, I wonder why they changed it. Any idea what year it closed? I was guessing during the mid-1990s.

Surprise

Motts

What are the factoids? There's always a great amount of guessing made at these abandoned places because most of us have never seen them in operation, so that's all we can do...

I think the buildings are just going to be leveled. There's a construction fence up already.

Thank you I hope to start publishing soon, I think I just need to focus on a small portion of my work.

Thanks, there was actually plenty of light in these rooms, as no boards were secured to the windows.

Stuff always seemed to get moved around a lot at Norwich. Yeah I would imagine it was a day room and the bed was placed there after it closed.

It reminds me of that one bed at Danvers, I think someone dragged it up to the top floor of the administration building...

Correct Mike; the curtain was manufactured by H.W. Johns-Mansville Co., a major manufacturer of fireproof asbestos products. This curtain was most likely made between 1901 and 1926 judging by the company name.

I'm not sure if it would be very dangerous unless it was being cut or torn open; many asbestos products that aren't very friable wouldn't be much of a hazard if left alone.

Nope, about a million people still receive electroshock every year.

Floorboards

Motts

The sub-floor under the planks was pretty solid. All the buildings at Norwich seemed pretty solid floor-wise, with the exception of Awl (the building North of administration), which was pretty spongy.

I believe it's an autoclave used to sterilize bedpans.

Thanks; I'm not entirely sure what the purpose of the room was, although the piano hints at a recreational or music / art therapy area.

Resentment

Motts

I can imagine a severely underfunded and understaffed institution leaving these things on the wall, or not bothering to repair it if the building was being shuttered. I'm not sure who else would take the time to carve stuff into a wall in a pitch black room...

Purgatory

Motts

It is straw on the ground; someone had previously mentioned fire department training using straw and wood pallets, which might explain the soot and materials left in this building.

The line in the top right is definitely odd; I thought it was the wall buckling in but it almost looks painted on...
