I couldn't really figure this one out either - it appeared to be a cabinet with a mirror backing, but the doors would not close completely.

Perhaps you were in Mount Wilson State Hospital in Pikesville? It was located Northwest of Baltimore and closed in the 1980s; the place is now the North Oakes Retirement Community.

Glenn Dale is about an hour south of Mt. Wilson.

This was originally a psychiatric hospital for people who were thought to have been "incurably insane" until 1890, when they began admitting regular (acute) psychiatric patients.

Breaking into prison was half the fun :-)

Yes, it looks like 50s-60s era stuff put in. Drop ceilings can save a lot on heating costs, and make the job of installing new lighting, sprinkler systems and plumbing much easier - you can just cover up the mess of pipes and wires with cheap panels or wall board. The resilient linoleum tile covers hard to clean wood flooring and is probably fire resistant (asbestos).

I think the importance of aesthetic charm in psychiatric hospitals took a back seat as the 20th century progressed... it seems as if almost every state hospital in the country became an overcrowded mess which had to be dealt with on a shoestring budget. These kinds of renovations were probably the most sensible course of action for many.

I don't recall finding a pipe organ in there - I don't think I really poked around a lot backstage though. It was super hot and humid, and the pigeon feces were really rank, so we made this trip quick.

It's not a rural location, that's for sure - a greenbelt surrounds the campus.

I don't think they allow anyone into these buildings, as they are condemned. I think I remember the theater being used for that...

It sounds like a good idea, but I think false impersonation might land one in deeper trouble than just shooting photos... you might wind up throwing your innocence right out the window and tacking on an additional misdemeanor to the possible list of charges if caught.

It can get a little funky in the warmer months, but nothing unbearable. The really stinky places are the ones that have no air circulation at all (boarded up tight, some basements, etc).

Yes I always wear boots; a lightweight police-style boot for the summer and insulated waterproof winter boots for the snow.
