Cool! I 'might' be making a trip down there in February/March. Depends on funds.

Felyne, where is the world are you? (if you don't mind me asking)

Ah, thanks Felyne. Frankly, having once worked as a mechanic this 'mild profanity' doesn't trip my metre off.

OT RANT! DON'T READ! (you were warned)

As for 'upsetting the Christians here', the more that can be upset the better. As a Christian myself I feel a good number of 'us' need a good thrashing with a metre long cluestick. The 'conservative religious right' needs a good swift kick is the nether-regions. Sometimes I feel so very ashamed of my affiliation and what is said and done in it's name.

Traction

Mathue

There's nothing 'photoshopped' about it! The 'floating' as you put it is because the wheels are well up inside those huge legs. Some traction beds will actually retract the wheels so that it sits firmly in the floor (this one the feet get cranked down). As for the lighting in the room, you're forgetting that this isn't direct light! Photoshopped indeed! Hey, you know they faked the moon landing right, you can tell by the light and shadows ;)

Keeping power on keeps people out, reduces street mining and keeps the ventilation system working. It's cheaper in the long run then letting it deteriorate and having to fix it up later.

Power is often kept on to discourage street miners from stripping out the copper. Places like this get power at a bulk rate, what it costs is less than the labour of watching for looters.

You sure the ghosts just aren't people in glowing masks?

Sorry folks, I've been in many places where there are supposed to be tortured spirits, whether infants, children, ordinary schmucks or solders. Only thing I heard was wind, creaking timbers, furry animals or even machinery (in active buildings). But I've never seen anything to make me believe that there's ghostly bodies haunting the dark corners of the room.

Hmm, are comments vanishing? I can't find any post that Celeste, Lynne or Felyne are responding to.

Solarium

Mathue

Looks like some stripping has occurred here, the radiators seem to have vanished. If you look under some of the windows you can see the unpainted wall where a 'roller' wouldn't fully reach.

Main Hall

Mathue

It'd was the fashion of the time (60's-70's) to modernize rooms in this way. It may seem stupid by today's standards but it wasn't that way then. Odds are it's still under there though in poor shape no doubt.

A long way back on this site Motts identified a soap dispenser as a light fixture. It's taken on a life of it's own since then.

Interesting how common this hallway design is. Every UK asylum we've seen has these long hallways with canted upper edges.

Anyone notice the edge details on the joists?

POISONS inSIde not FOR INTERNAL USE

Mind you, one wonders just where the ones that are for internal use are. I expect that this has adhesive letters which have come off. I'd love to see a high rez version of the image.

You're reacting to the light. To me it's not so much creepy but a tad somber, stark and lonely.

It looks so frigid, barren and lonesome. The low golden sun rays trying to being warmth. Heaven help the people that called this home ;/

The door probably is so swollen that it sticks open today. I doubt that the hinges are in very good condition either.

Lynne, I'm so glad you hang around here. It gives us insight to so many practices that most of us have no clue about. I always look for your posts.

It's for coal most likely, I would be surprised if it was still in use by the time this place closed though.

There should be a roof around that 'jog'. Interesting.

The tar roof on this place must have been in really poor condition before final closure.

Exit

Mathue

Actually, it's not a valve. It's a crank to open the windows. It's merely a gearbox, the shaft going up rotates either another gearbox or an exposed worm gear to open/close the windows.
