Eden Hall was in Torresdale, PA, Benz Boy. It closed in 1969.

The High Altar

No, Hobo, it was the chapel of a Catholic girl's school, Convent of the Sacred Heart, Eden Hall. I attended daily Mass in that chapel, as did all the students and all the nuns. I'm afraid we took its beauty for granted; I appreciate what we have lost more than I appreciated it when I had it. Hopefully, a lesson learned.

I agree with you, Diana. I was in the class of '58. I never expected to see it again, but somehow I still expected it to keep on being there. This is a shock and a shame.

I think those were just the door handles and someone chained them together to keep vandals out...if only it had worked.

I wonder if the A/M design could stand for Ave Maria. This might have been on the side altar to Mary. Wish I could say I remembered it, but I don't. :(

Thank you, Mr. Motts. This was my first experience of your work, but I am now definitely a fan. Eden Hall will always have a special place in my heart....and in my memory.

Nomina Sacra

We liked to think of it as standing for "I have suffered" but we were taught it was the first three letter of Jesus' name in Greek, as Mr. Motts states above.

It was truly beautiful...we went to 7:00 Mass every morning...we lined up according to height and filed in, shortest first, so the shorter girls were always sitting up front and the taller ones supposedly could see over them, I guess. But at that hour and at that age, I'm afraid I didn't appreciate the beauty that was surrounding me. Thanks for these pictures...you've brought back many memories.

Pews

We students sat in the pews and the nuns sat in the individual seats along the sides...there was a name for them but I can't remember it. I was there in the 50s...a long time ago.

What I love is that each cherub has its own personality! Great shots!

Miss Gabriel would have been able to translate it...she was our Latin II teacher.

The motto of Eden Hall was "Dare to Be True", Weebs...I like that you think it "still dares to gleam."
