It's so sad looking at this and knowing that none of the interior of the building exists now.

I remember seeing those in the old hospital in my home town. I don't think they use those anymore. Wonderful shot!!

That is a Hospital Bed minus the mattress. And so they left it to crumble and rot into eternity.

That looks like the attic that the beautiful wood construction was in. So Beautiful!!

It looks like some kind of classroom to me too. Wouldn't be medical, being in the administration section, and a boardroom would be more decorated. The lights say classroom. Could be for Staff meetings too. I agree; the photograpy is beautiful and the comments, both by Motts and the readers makes this site very interesting. I love it.

WOW! I hope they leave the chimneys when they renovate the place.

How sad it is that they let the roof get in that condition.

It's hard to believe they would destroy most of that building; it could all have been converted to apartments like the center 1/3 is now. I just came from the Avalon Bay webcam and noticed that the scaffolding around the tower. The webcam is in the rear of the building, and the view of the tower is not so good. It would be wonderful to see some photos from the front of the building. The new roof is on the building now and it looks exactly like the old roof. From the outside the building will look like it did in old times.

The lose of two thirds of the kirkbride is a major tragedy, but Avalon Bay is doing a great job on the remaining part of the kirkbride. The roof looks fantastic, without the beautiful chemneys of course. It will look awsome when they rebuild the center tower to it's former glory. The old brick work of that portion of the hospital remains and it will look almost as it did in better days. Have any of you been to the Danvers construction web cam to watch the construction there. It's no longer there ,is it???? Such a shame to destroy these buildings. Many of the buildings photographed and displayed on this site have since been demolished. I could never travel that far to visit one of the buildings, so the photos are my visit. Thanks to Motts, we still have them to view. The architecture is so beautiful and awsome. The big problem in the US is destruction of the buildings that were built on the beautiful revival schemes and replacing them with partical board, cookie cutter housing. Soon we will have no architectural history! Greed and near sightedness drive that destruction!

Yes, I put Simon in there. He was the personality being addressed. That is a great movie. Funny thing is. I had watched it before I found this site and noticed the screened in stairs on the Northampton album, then was reading here in the Danvers Album and found this to be the movie setting. I bought the movie and watched it a few more times. Danvers reaches out over the net and gets ya. Very strange how that happens, strong, very strong draw. A testament to Motts' great photography talent. :)

Na, no ghosts, no such thing, but the building itself is magnifacent. Looking at it and knowing that so many lives passed there that were troubled in so many ways, the suffering, the pain. The beautiful building only gave them shelter and warmth. 1/3 of it, with a new interior, will still give warmth and shelter to people, but in a much happier invironment. There is one thing for certain; It will never be as magnifacent and beautiful as it was when Motts took these photos. See how some uncaring person has broken the window and window frame. So sad.

Thanks Mr. Motts for giving us all a chance to see these beautiful places. Your Photogaphy is great!! All the buildings are beautiful, but Danvers is THE beauty among beauties. At least the shell of the center 1/3 of the building was spared, and the new buildings around it are built on the same theme as the old Kirkbride.

OMG! Yes! It does look like someone has been sleeping in there. Homeless, transients, former patients? Can you imagine what it would be like trying to sleep there at night? The quietness! One could here every little sound and wonder; What is that??? And when someone was there sight seeing, you would hear them walking down bellow.. CREEPYYY!! And if an urban explorer happened to walk in there and someone raised up from the bed? Me? I would go through the window..lol

Let us all be thankfull that at least part of the old building will be restored. It could have been far worse.

I wonder if the security guards would freak if someone dressed as a lady in long flowing white garments and ran screaming across the road and off into the night.

The chimneys are beautiful. Can you imagine what a chore it was to heat that building in the days before electricity? Thanks Motts!
