Who doesn't love those old european concrete water towers? :)

Basin

Looks very military. Remembering that these were largely unfinished, when they were occupied by the military, they would have been finished in a spartan manner. Still icky, however...

Porcelain

lithium

There appears to be a ghost shadow for some wood stall framing above the toilets. When these buildings were taken for military use, those stalls might have been removed since the military custom at the time was for open toilets.

Shrine

lithium

Given the age of this sanatorium, one can only wonder at what horrible abuses occurred during the Hitlerzeit when "abnormal" children were routinely euthanized. Not saying any of that took place here but who knows?

The Tower

The BCT is in flux right now as it appears and then disappears off the list of potential high speed rail hubs that are being proposed. If the BCT gets on the list, and the HSR plans for New York State are approved and funded, then it might be finally (!) fully renovated and opened for rail passengers. Stay tuned...

Spring Night

The Richardson Center Group has issued their plans to redevelop this property and restore most of the buildings on it. Soon, there will be an opportunity for anyone to come into these buildings and gain some sense of what HH Richardson had intended.

Cut

Lithium

It's a drag that those bars got cut. The great thing about these old jails and prisons are the bars shielding cells from common areas. I bet they cut them worried they would scare off potential buyers.

Outstanding pix and article! They really open a window on that era. Those Toyota workers might have some idea if they view this.

Livers, hearts, lungs, I guess they usually left the sweetbreads inside. I'd probably be creeped out if a flour can was nearby.

Shower Room

Lithium

At the time these showers were built, many public schools had rudimentary showers or were installing spartan group showers. Public hygeine overruled privacy concerns, especially for boys who were going to be of draft age anyway and would end up in military style accomodations. No big deal.

Drawers

Tagging up an old morgue is just whistling past the graveyard. There's a drawer waiting somewhere for that tagger, for that very special day.
