well, i have a digi camera, and i was having issues with motion blurr, but you said you use a tripod, lol, that pretty much answered my question. But my digi camera has different lighting effects-or settings on it, and i was just curious if yours is similar and what you do

OMG lynne, you are funny. This whole thread is very interesting. I enjoy seeing everyone's opinion, and it is true many of us on this site do not know what its like to be in a place like that or what its like to work there. Myself being an artist, though I have to say, only an effective artist can provoke feelings like what i see here. Kudo's to motts. Its not everyday you see art move people

i'm not sure what the web site was trying to imply, but it basically talked about old ways that mental illness was treated with back in the 1800's. that was one of the things listed on there and it said that sometimes mental issues would be acredited to teeth and various other parts of the body, as well as using labotomy. pretty twisted treatment if you ask me. although what you have said does make some sense. if a person is impaired physically or mentally and they had an abcessed tooth, i can see why they mistake that for a fit or mental problem-so much was misunderstood back then, you could be institutionalized for anything

I was 5 in 1985. Its hard to believe the "Golden age of Asylum" was still pretty prevalent back then, it wasn't really that long ago-or at least it seams it wasn't that long ago

You sound as though you speak from experince? I have seen many pic's of asylums, but funny none of them i could see padded rooms in them. Mostly what I have seen is seclusion rooms.

I was researching and I found out that in some cases things like teeth back then could be come of the causes to drive a person insaine( of course we know this is false). I know they more likely would have a dentists office or equipment because even mentaly ill people need cleanings and ect., but sometimes i wonder if they were painfully pulling teeth in their dentist chairs for no reason, other than to try to cure their mental issues

I'm sorry, but I wasn't intending to be political, I only ask because I am writting a fiction story with an asylum and I'm doing alot of research for it, I saw this site and looking at Letchworth inspired me to write it, so any and all tid bits of patient stories or info is well accepted :-)

I wonder if people are still institutionalized for large periods of time anymore, or if they are all done by out patient or half way homes. I have heard that some of the old kirkbride asylums are still functioning.

Such a morbid thing to see, sometimes i wonder what the hospitals intensions were of the patients. This certainly could not promote a heathly well being. Maybe they wanted to keep them insaine so that they could warrant more funding from the government, lol.

this picture looks very desolate, like from a time long forgotten. It's rather sad the treatment that many recieved in these places over the years, only to be burried as a number is a forgotten grave plot, i've read that many families actually left their unwanted loved ones in places to rot. great picture, it really captures the mood

I guess that could be one of the reasons why these places sometimes have fires, along with all of the papers and flamable items left behind
