Shortly after turning 18, I had the misfortune of being taken to jail in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. This was in 1984. At that time, the jail in Ft. Lauderdale was very old and I remember it was condemned shortly after my stay. To say the least, it was a very unpleasant experience and one thing that haunts mt memory of the place is being put in a part of the jail that seemed as if it hadn't been used in a long time. It was a huge cell, very cold, dimly light and dank. There were toilets (toilets is the word for them but that's not what they were, not in the sence as what you have in your bathroom) against the wall. They were actually holes cut into a long wood box that ran the leagnth of the wall. They were open air, with no seats and no lever to flush. This is very similr to what i saw a very long time ago and it's very chilling.
