Further comment on Crudelle/Janello.

Something is amiss with the article. Something that had not struck me when I read the slowart article the first time in Jan 06.

Dates do not line up properly in the articles timeline. A portion of the story tells how Vincent Crudelle was emotionally scarred at age 7 or 8 while visiting the then 'abandoned for several years' Rocky Point House of Horrors.

Well...the park closed in 1994 (and wasn't truly abandoned until after the auction in 1996 but we'll use 1994 as a starting date for the following). So lets for arguments sake say that 'abandoned for several years" equals at least 3 years. So...in 1997 Crudelle was supposedly 8. According to that article he stopped writing to his sister and/or disappeared in 2001. So if we follow the articles timeline Crudelle disappeared at age 12. Meanwhile he was suppose to have had his own workshop and attend RISDE (an art college - entering students are usually 18).

It just doesn't add up. Therefore, the article is most likely fabricated.

A little late but I just saw the request for more information about Vincent Crudelle. Here are some links:
vincent_crudelle on Myspace. Note that this is not Crudelle himself. Nor do I know who is behind this myspace page. Interestingly enough on the friends list for this page is the "Philadelphia State Hospital" Myspace web page. Almost certainly someone who is an Opacity member (or has at least passed through here one time or another).

The slowart website mentioned above has the full text from Sacred Darkness minus a few pictures.

hellisempty dot com - owned by Janello. His contact email is ont the site. There's not too much else there. The site is dedicated to Crudelle though.

Further, there is/was a business named Janello-Crudelle studio in Pawtucket RI. The phone number listed for the business has a cell prefix - but the company name is unadvertised (not even white pages). I found it only on a listing for the Pawtucket Art Festival 2006 when I googled Janellos name.

Minor corrections to some of the above posted information.
Conrad Ferla ceased to own the park sometime in the 80s. 1984 I think.
The Bonoff family (Christof Bonoff?) owned Warwick Musical Tent. To the best of my knowledge Conrad had nothing to do with WMT.

Occaisionally, if I cannot reach something I need to take a picture of I place the camera on a tripod with the legs closed but fully extended and then lift the tripod overheard after setting and tripping the timer.

...would that have worked for you or were you there without a tripod??

The quote you refer to was indeed inscribed inside the RP House of Horrors. It was located at the very beginning of the ride either on or near to the first set of swinging doors that the car sort of crashed through when you went on the ride.

I believe you had a slight typo. The quote read "When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth". Almost the same - but just in case you were going for accuracy.

...and the answer is...CF was general mgr in the early 80s.

Here's two for you. The t-shirt gift shop was owned separately from the park. Who owned it?

In the early years of the park all the rides were owned by individuals and they leased the space for the ride.. Eventually, the park owners bought up all the rides. What was the last ride to be privately owned within the park?

Gondola Wheel

Right back at you...there were actually three rides that did that - Musik Express, Apollo 11 and the Carousel. The first two played contemporary music and the last more traditional calliope music. I dont recall if the little carousel in Kiddieland played music or not.

You've got to make the questions harder than that!

The hinges are on this side. Possibly the hinge pins could have been removed without damaging the door and then put back when you were done satisfying your curiosity.

Correction to Patricks post. The Enterprise did not have a steering wheel. The ride with the steering wheel was called the SkyDiver. It is true that the Enterprise was in front of the Arcade.

The dance company put on shows primarily on the Showtime stage located in front of the park management office. The dance shows and magicians act did their prepping/practice in the old Cliff House lounge. A closed down bar/night club located in a separate section of the park management office. No windows. Rumors of hauntings blah blah blah. A number of people I knew did not like going in there.

This hallway was not removed. Motts took this photo in 2005.

I may be mistaken because its been a long time but I believe this to be located on the ground floor the last hallway before you exit.

The park props in the 80s were worked upon by Mr. Crudelle. From all accounts a rather odd man from an odd family. You can read about Mr. Crudelle's son here:

http://www.slowart.com/articles/janello.htm

I have no information about the accuracy of the article. It does seem to be written with a flair for the dramatic. I have never met any of the Crudelles.

Wait a sec. Something doesnt add up year wise. Craig worked at RP in 89 which is also the year that he committed the 2nd set of murders. By 1994, the year you were there, he no longer worked for the park. In fact he had already been in prison for five years. I'm wondering if you are confusing the two Craig's. The murderer worked in foods not games.

Both sisters looked amazingly alike although it was obvious that there was a couple of years difference between them. They also both had that Warwick 'big hair'. No offense if that also describes you! I'm thinking that perhaps the girls name was Jenny rather than Caty, but even that might be wrong. We're probably talking 1991. Not sure if they were still there in 1994. The younger sister worked in the flea market in the winters.

Ummm....I was there the day of the auction. I was not however standing right there when the House of Horrors was up. Later on, the same day, someone I used to know that was also quite knowledgeable regarding the park said to me that the House of Horrors had been sold. We were both laughing because we knew that it could not be moved.

I have no specific knowledge of what happened to the props inside. I can only speculate. Here are some possibilities:

1. Stolen - there have been many souvenir hunters in the interval subsequent to the parks closing.

2. The new owner took what he could and left the rest. Although the cars are probably the most interesting they were also heavy and attached to the track. There was a special 'trick' to removing them. Without someone to tell them they may not have realized that a certain three foot section of the track was designed to be popped out so that the cars could be worked upon on their underside and/or removed. The cars were also easily damaged by inexperienced operators who might for various reasons try to roll the cars backwards along the track. A big no-no due to the mechanical finger on the underside of the car that acted as the electrical contact point for deliivering electricty to the car and caused the wheels to move. There was at least one car in the gallery here, The Reptile, that was removed from the track. Based on where it was located I suspect that whoever removed it forced it off the track at the bottom of the conveyor belt.

3. Remember Janello? Perhaps he or his family came back and took what they created.

4. I have suspected, but do not know, that the gravestones may have been removed by park employees in the final days. The gravestones had the names of various year round park employees and they may have been intrigued to take the gravestoness that possessed their names.

Motts you had photos of two cars in the gallery - were there more than two cars remaining?

There was no wooden roller coaster there in the 90s. I suspect that you were visiting Lincoln Park which did have a big white wooden roller coaster.

The Cyclone was Blue, the Corkscrew white. There were roller coasters at the park that were wooden back in the late 60s. Possibly early 70s.
