We used to bring wax paper and sit on it going down the giant slide. We would go so fast you would ride up high on the sides and almost out of the slide. I remember looking over the edge at the water one time and thinking "here i go" i also remember getting off the slide and instictively going left to get back on, but the tunnel up was on the right and i nearly went in the water.

I bike commute through this place every day.
I have investigated many of the buildings and though about how difficult it must have been to be a patient there.
Kids have really trashed the place over the years, but it's still a unique place and a very quiet, though provoking section of my commute.

Last summer I got a treat when Hollywood moved in for a few weeks with Bruce Willis as the star. The movie is bases on the schools original use as a WWII POW camp.

Hi maman01,
The hook, yeah, her favorite song was "Gloria" by Laura Branigan.
If you remember us going down to the girls end then yes, we know each other.
I can't remember the name of the kid, Danny I think, had bad feet, that could peel the paint off the walls!!!!
Been a long time.
You know me, I was the only red headed kid on Ward D. LOL.
You mentioned Sharon, yeah, she screamed bloody murder that night, that's what alerted the night staff.
I was down there seeing Kim, not her.

Jewel,
True enough and I have related some stories and a lot of others are unsaid.
As for me, I still hurt, but I have moved on with my life.
That's not to say that the pictures do not revive the memories 'cause they do, it just takes effort, a lot of effort, to suppress those memories which I do not care to relive.
Does that mean I forgot them?
No, I will never forget them, I just choose not to relive them.
All of us kids who were there was hurt, others more so then others.
The kids who lived on Ward E was more abused then those on other Wards because of the staff that worked on Ward E.
Willie was working on Ward D when I was there, so was Jack and Jack was a hard ass who got his kicks out of restraining kids and smashing their faces into the floor after the staff already had the kid under control.
It did make a difference as to what Ward a child was placed on.

Gaebler School Girl,
I am NOT trying to make that place sound like a vacation.
Because you never got to go outside or go into town does not mean it didn't happen.
You have to remember that when I was there Mr. Heathwood ran the place, and unlike other people Mr. Heathwood allowed such trips.
You rant and rave about this place as though only you was hurt.
Everyone of us was hurt, but I related other things instead of the bad things, living one nightmare is enough, re-living it is even worse.
I still hurt seeing these pictures, but I moved on with my life.
And if you read the comments you will find that another person remembers the trips I talked about.

Hi Jewel.
Not too sure how many would like to relive those nightmares.
I recount some things and others, well, just left unsaid I guess.
When I was there in 1971 or 1972 I was placed there by my father because he didn't know what else to do with me.
Like most children I was hyper-active and parents really didn't understand that.
So as a result of that I became a ward of the state, and those memories are left buried.

Hi momto4.
Do you know when Mr. Heathwood retired?
Since a lot of people do not remember him I must assume he retired around 1983 or so.
