Actually, most Satanists (LaVeyan anyhow) don't usually refer to their symbol as a Penticle/Pentagram at all, they call it a Baphomet.

I could be mistaken, but I believe I've read somewhere these houses were abandoned due to some environmental problem in the area at the time (toxic something...sorry, I don't recall exactly) and everyone had to be evacuated. I believe the curtains were painted on the boards to make the appearance people still lived there in order to dissuade vandalism. HA! (lol)
