Dawn, I believe many probably were raped and abused but in the later years things changed there. As for Geraldo? I worked in that very building he went to and showed on tv. I worked with that resident they showed naked. Her name was Iris and no one could keep any clothes on her as much as we tried. She always stripped her clothes off and would constatnly rock, it wasn't because she was being neglected. We had to go as far as actually tying a jumpsuit from the back on her to keep clothes on her. All the residents wore diapers because they were severely retarded. Geraldo made a name for himself with this whole thing while looking at these residents with disgust. Geraldo is a slimeball!!!

Letchworth was a great place to work when I was there. I started in 75 and was there for years. It probably does have horror stories from the past but when I was there it wasn't like that. I was also there when Geraldo came for a visit and what an act he put on! Talk about a media whore! When one of the residents put their hand out to him you should have seen the look of disgust on his face. We took good care of them, brought them on trips and even to out own homes and I worked in one of the worst buildings where they were severely retarded. We were a family there and really bonded with the residents there. Many miss this place and relationships that were formed and never forgotten!

Wow! This brings back memories! I worked there as a clerk partime when I was in High School! Delivered mail throughout the hospital. Anyone remember Dr. Padial? Walter Brown the X-Ray tech? Those were the days in the hospital especially when it was packed with the new employees getting their physicals!!!!

Hey loinglostinGeorgia, I worked in Letchworth and was one of those therapy aids and I wasn't abusive!!! And you must have had a bad record from working there if you couldn't find a job after working there. Only bad reputations follow the individual employee not the whole crew!

Hey Timmothy Jones! I worked there for many years and knew Bruno! He could also sing every Hank Williams song! The poor guy died a few years ago. He was one of the misfortunes whose parents just dumped him there because of how he looked. Bruno was not mentally retarded when he was put there but being there all his life had an impact on him. He sure knew all the dirt on all employees and even the higher ups there! Alot of people were dumped there if they were blind, deaf or had anything wrong with them by their parents.

The Lab

I don't know what might have went on before the 70's but I worked there from 1975 to 1989 and it was one big family! The residents were treated well, went on trips to Jersey Shore, picnics, amusement parks, etc. Alot of employees even took the residents home for a visit. Letchworth got a bad rap due to things we really dont know about in years prior. It was a great place to work and for the years I worked there with more federal regulations and programs implemented these people were being taken care of. Alot of the footage you saw from Geraldo looked bad but even when I started working there there was more to know than just seeing the footage like when he showed one resident rocking back and forth naked. That resident was in my cottage and no one could keep clothes on her. She would strip everything and that was what she did, rock. Geraldo made it seem like he was so concerned for these residents but when he came later on when I worked there and came in my building I saw first hand what his whole purpose was, publicity for him! You should have seen how he reacted when one of the residents put her hand out to him! He had a total look of disgust on his face! Geraldos a media pig and took this story for all it was worth for himself! No one can speak on this place unless you actually worked there! Sad day when it closed for thousands of people who had gotten attached to the residents!

Tats off to Motts and Pat for keeping us informed and for letting us "inside" Halcyon Hall and to Simon for a "wake-up, this is it in a nutshell" reminder that at this stage nothing can be saved here. Having lived 5 minutes from Bennett until my late teens, then returning 5 years ago to take my own pictures inside , I can vouch for the state of the ruined condition.... but even in this condition the workmanship is evident, just really awesome... I wish I have had the chance to wander these halls before I left in '77'. Just one of those places that was let go and no one cared until it was too late...

Having grown up and then moving out of Millbrook I had lost track of many of the goings on in town. Bennett has always to me been a draw, and in its prime was a grand "gateway" to town. In this day and age of refurbishing of many structures to become viable forms of business, why was this beautiful building with so much potential left to become the " eyesore" as many people seem to call it? What was it about this place that our town goverment hated it enough to let it just rot before our very eyes? Its a disgrace to know that that they just sat back on their big fat freakin' asses and just watched this place just cumble. This building with so much history behind it should of been preserved long before it fell into such a state of disrepair. You all should be be so damn proud of yourselves.... bunch of damn losers !
