Burned Hall

AutumnTwin

Reminiscent of the old prison that was used to film A Nightmare On Elm Street....especially the hallway in the beginning where Tina first encounters Freddy at the start of the movie.

Looks like the fire didn't get too hot to leave soot stains in the peelig paint but was hot enough to cause a lot of rapid peel.

Paperwork

I think the time limit is 10 years then destroy records after that.....but they should be archived before destruction, I agree.

Motts.....urban warrior.

The blue works well for it though....makes it look more antequated of a photograph.

Neat that the terminal below has such lovely details.

Concourse Windows

AutumnTwin

Glad to know it's going through restoration and cleaning.....instead of demolition, like so many of our architectural treasures.

Baggage Facade

AutumnTwin

Kind of neat the way that ONE window was spared the fate of bad weather, stupid kids and vagrants.

Second Floor Hall

AutumnTwin

I love the old architecture....the transoms made hallways a little less claustrophobic feeling, let in natural light, and something a bit more interesting than a plain ordinary wall to view while walking to each office.

Hey, if you get rich enough to afford THIS baby (and all of the repairs to restore it) you could have the main floor as your gallery of ruins and live more than comfortably in the upper floors....save the big looming tower for the tourists' view from the top.

Metal Collars

Maybe it was either to keep people from climing the posts....OR maybe the plaster was crumbling and it was used as a cover for it instead of repairing it (like a pressed tin ceiling was sometimes used to hide cracking plaster ceilings).

Typewriter Room

Looks like they tried to teach typing to the more capable patients here for some meager hope of life outside Pennhurst.

Motts, how do you know this?

Foyer

A shame such beautiful decor is left to rot away into nothingness.

Safety Bathroom

AutumnTwin

I've seen polished chrome mirrors at a few high schools in not-so-nice neighborhoods for the same reason....to prevent them from being shattered and the shards used to harm people.

Children

AutumnTwin

IS that a wheelchair or is she riding one of those turn-of-the-century bicycles with the one giant wheel? Hard to tell amongst the cracking.

Interesting that it's "politically correct" images.

Ceiling Light

Sick as it sounds (and as dangerous as it would likely be).....it would be kinda neat to see what kind of fireworks come out of THAT baby if you turned it on in its present state!

PSST - It's bad luck to view your reflection thorugh a broken mirror! (if you follow that belief)

Ceiling Light

AutumnTwin

Maybe they left select lights on for "security" reasons. There are a few closed down restaurants and stores in my area and the power's been on there for a LONG time with no occupants. (too bad I missed out on the three-day demolition project of one old dumpy restaurant)

Looks like the vulture, the bird of death, reigns supreme at this place. He's got the luxury suite up there, it seems!

You can tell this was private at one time from the fancy things like this.

Amazing that it's so clean....the ceiling tiles are intact, the floor looks saveable....just need to repaint and get the power on and voila!

How many hours were you there taking these amazing photos?

There's that asymmetry again.....subtle asymmetry.

Were there words on the keystone, or just some ornate pattern?

Center

Interesting how the symmetry of the Kirkbride design is quietly altered with the placement of the chimney on the right and the chimney protruding from the central tower.
