Northampton, Massachusetts.
Michael P. Hogan, President and CEO of MassDevelopment, Northampton Mayor Mary Clare Higgins announced significant milestones in cleaning up environmentally hazardous buildings at the Northampton State Hospital site. MassDevelopment has begun removing asbestos from the buildings and will soon begin demolishing contaminated buildings at the site.

"The Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) Office has given us a green light to proceed with development at Northampton State Hospital," Michael P. Hogan said today at the hospital site. "We have taken the first steps toward eliminating environmental and public safety hazards."

"We are very pleased that the on-site work has begun to ready the property for development," said Northampton Mayor Mary Clare Higgins.

MassDevelopment is in the process of obtaining ownership of the Northampton State Hospital property from the state of Massachusetts. The Agency has partnered with The Community Builders to redevelop the 124-acre campus. Plans include 207 residential units, 476,000 square feet of commercial space, and a 60-80 unit assisted living facility.

On July 20, Kollmorgen Electro-Optical announced that it would be the first industrial tenant at the Northampton site. The company employees 200 people in Northampton, manufacturing periscopes, optronics, masts, and other weapon systems for surface ships and combat vehicles. Kollmorgen will occupy a new 100,000 square foot building at the former state hospital site.

"It is great news for the City that Kollmorgen is growing and that their needs can be accommodated at Hospital Hill Village. Kollmorgen fulfills the vision the City had of providing space for expanding businesses at the State Hospital. As a technology manufacturer, Kollmorgen is the perfect pioneer anchor tenant for the project and will set the tone for attracting other similar businesses to the campus," said Mayor Mary Clare Higgins. "Keeping Kollmorgen in the city has been a top priority for me. It has been an exceptional collaborative effort between Kollmorgen, MassDevelopment, and the City. We are very pleased the Kollmorgen will continue to be an important part of the Northampton community."

MassDevelopment works with municipalities, manufacturers, small and medium-sized business, health and elder care providers, as well as non-profit educational and cultural organizations.
