Firefighters knock down blaze at former Staten Island Hospital building in Tompkinsville

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- FDNY officials made quick work of a fire reported at the former Staten Island Hospital location in Tompkinsville.

The blaze at the abandoned structure warranted an all-hands response, according to emergency radio transmissions, the was quickly brought under control.

Emergency responders were bracing for squatters in the structure, located on Castleton Avenue at Cebra avenue, but thus far initial searches have turned up negative.

The neo-medieval structure designed by architect Alfred E. Barlow is brick. It is distinguished by its four corner towers, a brick exterior and Flemish-stepped gable fronts.

The hospital moved to its current location in Ocean Breeze in 1979.
